Breck girls: The cult of clean

Way back in 1930, Dr. John H. Breck, Sr. of Springfield, Massachusetts started the Breck Shampoo Company. When his son Edward J. Breck took over the company, he hired Charles Gates Sheldon to draw the advertisements. Those ads, featuring lovely women with haloes of light and pastels became the idealized images of purity, femininity and clean hair. You might know them as the Breck Girls.

Over the years a number of very famous models graced the pages of Ladies Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion, Seventeen, Vogue, Glamour and Harpers Bazaar as Breck Girls. There was Roma Whitney Armstrong, who was the first Breck Girl back in 1937. There was Cheryl Tiegs, Cybill Shepherd, Jaclyn Smith, Kim Basinger and last but not least, Brooke Shields.

You can still buy the original Balsam-scented Breck Shampoo at your neighborhood drugstore, but alas, you can't buy a magazine with a Breck Girl inside.
