The bad, the worse and the Uggs -- trends that should be trashed
Filed under: Accessories, CELEBRITY STYLE, Fashion, Celebrity, Best of the Season
Fad or fashion? Lasting style trend, or last year's trash? Sometimes I wonder how the seemingly ugliest things become "hot." Celebrities in the media? Style "icons?" Top designers parading their wares on the runways? Who knows -- it would probably take years of research to come up with a theory, and even then, it still wouldn't be able to explain why leggings-like super skinny jeans are the hottest thing since, well, boot-cut jeans.Regardless of the how and why they got there, the point is that ugly, hateful, unflattering, weird, wtf?!?!-inspiring trends are there. Styledash has picked out a few that we sincerely hope will just die out of existence forever after this season. I mean really die and never come back. Never -- like Hammer pants -- never.
Supersized Sunglasses: OK, we get it. You're such an enormous celebrity that you need to hide between equally enormous shades. Or perhaps the sun, despite scientific fact, is actually growing bigger and stronger and you need to protect your entire face from its harmful rays. I am not opposed to large sunglasses. I wear them myself because I do like the additional coverage they give my cheeks and temples. However, I am opposed to supersized satellite dishes barely hanging on to the end of your nose that protect nothing but your vanity.
Footless Tights/Leggings: Leggings are OK if they're worn for sheer laziness and comfort. Running out to the market for a dozen eggs? Sure throw on your oversized hoodie over a pair of leggings to dash in and out. However, leggings with a tunic, or under a ragged, fraying cut-off denim mini-skirt gets "beef" from us. OK, so maybe you call them "footless tights," in which case, wearing them with a short skirt makes sense to preserve some modesty. Then why wouldn't you just wear normal, footed tights? Do your ankles really need that badly to breathe? Our own Annie Wu put it best: "Wearing these skin-tight leggings under an obscenely short skirt still means you're wearing an obscenely short skirt. Modesty does not accompany wearing a paint-thin layer of fabric under what is virtually a headband."
Itty Bitty Mini-vest: I love something that is truly functional as well as fashionable. The vest, especially a menwear-inspired button-down vest, is a classic piece, and it keeps you warm without creating unnecessary bulk in the arms (important when you work at a desk). I even don't mind when the look is made casual by leaving the inside shirt untucked, and letting it peep out from under the vest. However, I have no idea what the point of a teeny tiny baby vest that hits just under the bustline is. Neither functional nor fashionable.
Animal as Accessory: We're not talking about animal prints. Nor are we talking about fur (we don't have the energy to get into that discussion today). We are talking about living, breathing, small animals carried around in oversized handbags-as-cages. With the exception of
Bubble hemlines: I admit it. I wore a dress with a bubble hemline once. It was a black and white dress that I wore to a wedding. In third grade! You see, bubbles are cute for little girls. It was even "cute" for a pink taffeta prom dress on a teenaged girl. The key word is "was" -- it was cute. Not anymore, at least not on women who don't want to look like they accidentally tucked the hem of their skirts into their underwear.Uggs: We bring this up last, and certainly least, because honestly, we have no idea how this Uggs-ly trend has clung on for this long. At first sight, we thought it was ridiculous. Then it grew on us because we couldn't escape its overexposed furriness, like the way "Promiscuous Girl" grew on us after we heard it every 20 minutes on the radio this summer. So, we tolerated Uggs on others, but we never gave in ourselves. Thank God we didn't because we realized that big furry boots worn with shorts or mini-skirts in the summertime, in LA or any other city that hasn't seen snow since the Ice Age, is stupid. (We must have been deprived of sleep and caffeine when we momentarily did think Uggs were OK.) Now why, why am I still seeing this abominable homage to the abominable snowman? Uggs. Yes, ugh. (Of course, if you do live in northern Canada and are wearing Uggs during the winter, we are totally OK with that.)
And if Hammer pants do come back, I think I might go to dinner with my teacup Yorkie wearing oversized sunglasses, a tiny vest over a bubble skirt with leggings underneath. But no, I will never wear Uggs.

I hope they also get rid of those 'low-rider' denim and
other type pants cut to expressly show the top of a woman's ass! It is the most obscene 'fashion' around. And the 'ladies' who wear them think they are being so trendy
when people are simply laughing behind their backs!First it
was pushup bras so pushed up that Janet Jackson's tit
defied the law of gravity and simply had to pop out. Then
came the thong, a most egregious insult to American women
around the world. And 'they' wonder why THEY hate us so much? Wake up Americans and develop some class, and along the way, MODESTY, remember that word? M-O-D-E-S-T-Y! You are an embarassment to the rest of us!

Oh come on! This is all fun girly stuff not to be taken uber seriously. Have fun with the way you look, if you're not into the tights or the big sunglasses then dont wear them! I'm not a fan of briging my pooch everywhere, or of ugly uggs, BUT i do like the look leggins under skirts and I actually LIKE wearing big sunglasses - but who cares?! If you like to bring your pooch around while wearing your Uggs who am I to judge?

Teeny tiny dogs are not cute. They are, however, endlessly punt-able.

p-u-lease i love my uggs. i wore them long before they ere a must have fashion item. and while i may live in hippie-ville, they are great here in portland where we get like 300 days of rain or drizzle or the threat there of. they are like wearing slippers to work, or a fleece blanket instead of a sweater. i shall proudly wear them for a long long time.

LIVING IN TEXAS I HAVE ONLY SEEN UGs ON TEENAGE GIRLS ... THAT WAS TWO YEARS AGO. I DON'T SEE THEM ANYMORE. THEY AREN'T A BIG HIT IN THE SOUTH. I SEE A FEW LEGGINS ON TEENS. I AM QUITE CONSERVATIVE IN MY OWN DRESSING ... ALOT OF BLACK WITH TOUCHES OF COLOR IN THE WINTER AND WHITE IN THE LOOOOONG SUMMER.

Sometimes it’s not about style, but about comfort and creativity. I understand what you’re saying about all the fab-fashion disasters, yet what ever happened to being individualistic. If fashion was this never ending idea of wearing the same thing and not experimenting, there would be no such thing as fashion. We also wouldn’t be here talking about how you don't like the trends because they don’t fit YOU or YOUR fashion sense. If you want to live in a society of everyone wearing black and 3in heals, you’re more then welcome to be the uninteresting person on the subway next to me! =)
PS. I simply think you don’t have a clear understand of fashion what so ever!

I was in Santa Monica last weekend and I saw numerous attractive ladies with uggs on with mini skirts and a small top.
Uggs in an area with horrible weather (not cali) are excusable. Otherwise if you are wearing them in 70-90* weather, whats the point?
"I simply think you don’t have a clear understand of fashion what so ever!"
There is a difference between what is trendy to wear and what looks good. I think some not all big framed glasses look lame. However on some girls that pick the right style for their face, it does look hot.

I'm curious, what does Style Dash think of the new Uptown Uggs? I couldn't stand the classic Uggs but I think the Uptown style isn't so bad.

Uggs have been around for many years and keep coming back in fashion ... The reason ? As someone who has just bought some, Let me say that they are the most comfortable shoes EVER !!! AND for your informataion were originally for surfers in the warm weather as well~~
Feet don't sweat in them- because of the lambs wool lining .They are comfy most of the year .

This is all very interesting reading! I suppose that what is ugg-ly to one person is fashionable to another, BUT I must say that MODESTY is something that a great deal of women/girls have forgotten about! I'm personally tired of seeing so much cleavage and bee-hinds everywhere I go---in public, magazines, on TV..you know it's true! Most of the time it isn't very pretty...and...tight clothes! Whew! I've seen the worst shaped bodies just poured into their clothes! Ugg-ly! I don't think it's a good idea to be showing quite so much flesh either--it contributes to making us be nothing but sex objects to men! Is anyone embarrassed anymore? You CAN be VERY fashionable and be MODEST!! If you can bend over one inch and we can see you hiney, then OH MY GOSH!!

The UGG thing is for pure comfort. I own 3 pairs and love them all. I would never be caught dead wearing a bubble skirt or leggings either. How about getting rid of camo? Just what are these people trying to hid from?

I think Uggs are the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned and like Imelda Marcos, I collect all kinds of shoes. Of course, here in the East Coast, it's a must during the winter time, specially. I don't care if it's in fashion or not, so long as I'm comfortable and confident wearing it.

I have 4 pairs of Uggs and I could care less if they are "ugly" or no longer popular. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I live in NJ, so I wear mine all winter/fall long.
If you try on Uggs, you will be converted. And yes, I for one find them adorable.

I always thought Uggs were the ugliest but then my daughter encouraged me to try on a pair and they are more comfortable than slippers! Also, they were made for surfers in Australia to wear on the beach; they're specifically designed to make walking on the sand easier so the climate of the are in which you live makes no difference.

UGG's are not just for looks my friend, they are for comfort. Like wearing scrubs when you are not even in the medical field. You step your foot into these furry little things, and you immediately imerse yourself in warmtha and comfort. You are walking in slippers all day, and no amount of wetness from melted snow can penetrate that suede exterior. I say wear those UGG's and wear them proud.

Here in the Northeast, Uggs in winter do not raise eyebrows. You wear them outside to keep your feet warm. When they come out in the spring & summer though, then they must go! No snow? No go!
As for little dogs in briefcases, together my dog and her basket weigh about 11 pounds. No carrying that weight anywhere particularly far. And, she isn't allowed in a lot of places even in her basket. So, while she has a fashionista dog wardrobe, she stays home while I do the shopping for her!

Hey! Whats up with the Skinny Pant this year. Those are as bad as the aforemetioned. I think that the designers and clothing manufacturers are emptying out their warehouses with Ghosts of Fashion Past and profiting from fashions that werent a hit a decade ago!(they need to eat too, or do they lol) and where else to start but in Cali.I am sure Go Go boots will be resurfacing again somewhre on this ball of blue (now those were kinda cute) Be true to yourself. Where what you feel good in. Dont let Fashion dictate you.. Dictate Fasion! Beauty comes from within. D
