As we've discussed before, there are consumers out there who really don't mind paying beaucoup bucks for truly luxe items. Case in point? These shoes, made out of pre-Revolutionary Russian reindeer hide. Not only does owning a pair of these special shoes mark you as one of the elite, it also means that you are wearing a very special piece of history on your feet.
Two hundred years ago, a ship bound for Italy went down off the coast of Plymouth, England. The Times of London reported that the ship and cargo were totally lost but the crew was saved. However, in 1973, amateur divers discovered the ship and recovered what has turned out to be millions of dollars worth of hides, which were largely preserved from the saltwater by the thick, black mud in the Plymouth Sound.
Prince Charles owns a pair of the reindeer hide shoes, and there is reportedly enough hide left to make about 40 more pairs of the extraordinary shoes. So, if you're a history-buff shoe connoisseur with about $4900 to spare, you can have a pair of your very own!
The shoes are available only at New & Lingwood or G.J. Cleverley & Company, both in London.
