Skin and Bones exhibit, where fashion and architecture meet
Filed under: Fashion, News, Runway Report
Yesterday afternoon I checked out the Skin and Bones exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The exhibit explores the intersection between fashion and architecture, juxtaposing pictures and models of buildings with runway fashions that feature similar design themes. The exhibit is broken down into themes such as shelter, identity and minimalism and styles such as pleating, folding and weaving. The connections are a bit of a stretch at times but it was fascinating to see the similarities between creating a building and draping the human form. It's also important to note that some of the most interesting architecture was created for fashion houses such as Tod's and Prada.Fashion faves on display include Issey Miyake, Ralph Rucci, Vivienne Westwood and Viktor & Rolf. My only problem with the exhibit was that the fashion shown was mainly right-off-the-runway dresses. I would have loved to have seen shoes and handbags included in this comprehensive exploration of the symbolic language shared between the things we wear and the places we live. The exhibit is on until March 5, 2007.
