A fragrance fit for a queen
How much would you pay to smell like a queen? While those Juicy Couture fragrance ads portraying an Antoinette-like court are charming, the real scent of the queen is a bit different and a lot more pricey. Historian Elisabeth de Feydeau discovered the recipes for Marie Antoinette's fragrances and now Sillage de la Reine "In the Wake of the Queen" is available for purchase. The scent is an amber essence of jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose, iris, cedar and sandalwood and the deluxe 8.5 ounce version sells in a Baccarat flask for $10,500. Believe it or not five of the ten flasks produced have already been sold. You can also buy a smaller (under one ounce) size with less fancy packaging (shown here) for $450 from the chateau of Versailles. The chateau is using sales from the perfume to buy an Antoinette artifact, an ornate wood traveling case, from a private collector. Hot blogging anesthesiologist Book of Joe has the whole story, including the article in the Washington Post.
