Miss Mexico won't wear violent dress for Miss Universe pageant
Filed under: Fashion, News, Best of the Season
Of all the reasons to scrap a pageant dress, Miss Mexico ditched her outfit for the Miss Universe competition because it was too violent. Designers were trying to create something that represented the nation's culture and history, but apparently they're a little cynical. They made a dress accented by sketches of hangings, coupled with a belt made of bullets.
Understandably, the Mexican people were outraged.
However, even though the dress was in a poor taste, it was technically accurate, and indeed a part of Mexico's history. It showed scenes from the 1926-29 Cristero war, in which Roman Catholic rebels rose up against the country's secular government -- a conflict which resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.
But to put it in perspective, one columnist wrote: "It would be like Miss USA wearing a dress showing images of the Ku Klux Klan in the Deep South, with their hoods, their burning crosses and beer cans."
Wow. Just when you thought pageants couldn't get any more ridiculous.

Congrats to her for standing up!!
We take this gun stuff way too lightly anymore...the glorification of any guns should not be part of a pagent. Yes, history and culture are important but there are better ways of accomplishing this!

Technically accurate? Yes. Ridiculous? Yes. In bad taste? Yes. Ugly dress? You bet.

Yeah, I thought this was about Miss USA refusing to wear a violent dress as my AOL welcome screen stated...hmmm....once again AOL is using misleading headlines to lure readers in. Shame on you! I am getting sick of them recycling old headlines by changing them, when I click on the link it turns out to be a story I read over two weeks ago under a different headline!
But anyways, on to the violent dress. Are they crazy? Who is gonna let a Miss Universe contesting wearing a ammo belt win? What's next noose necklaces? Grenade earings or maybe even shoe bombs...oh wait I got it a dress for Miss USA dipicting all the serial killers in US history!
Tasteless and and not something you want diplayed at a paegent.

I absolutely applaud her stance. Mexico is more than fights; with so many other options from which to choose - they decide we don't have enough violence in our lives! Good for her!!

Jeff,
They did not confuse Miss Mexico with Miss USA, you did. They were making an analogy to help us undertand how the Mexicans would feel about the dress. They were not confusing the 2 countries.

To Jeff Takin. If you READ yhe article, AOL does NOT call her Miss USA. The story says that a columnist compares Miss Mexico wearing that dress to a Miss USA wearing a dress with a scene of a KKK group.

My AOL welcome screen clearly states that is was Miss Mexico. If yours says it was Miss USA, that is very interesting.

Yea for her. lst it is not a very attractive dress for a pageant.
and it is such a violent statement not right for a lite hearted event
she was smart she knew it was a bad idea.
have fun

Hey Jeff -- Where in this article did you see Miss Mexico called Miss USA? It was a comparison to help you understand a little better. And one more thing, watch your mouth.

It was good enough for the Frito Bandito! What is the big deal....it is not like she is going to shoot someone or promote the guns...what a useless story. By the way, maybe she should have little green cards with a passport that has a red "X" through it to depict the millions of criminal aliens that have infested the USA and stolen our jobs and sucked our tax dollars and healthcare dry.

this is for jeff takin...
aol doesn't call miss mexico "miss america" they are talking about 2 different people... miss mexico wouldn't wear a dress depicting the violence in her country ....just as miss america wouldn't wear a dress depicting the ku klux clan (in her country - the usa) in the deep south...
get it, yet (or are you just ...dumb?) (i got it with the first reading) ...

Jeff - You apparently have no reading comprehension skills, can not spell, AND are racist. You are a prime example of why people from other countries look down on the U.S. , congratulations for making the rest of us look like morons (you might have to look that word up, so you might as well look up "sarcasm" while you're at it). And to think, I enlisted in the Navy to protect you and your rights to do just that. At least you're taking full advantage of it :-)
I can understand why she might not want to wear that dress, but what ELSE are the designers going to put on it? Skeletons and coffins for Dia del Meurto? Soccer and Aztec pyramids maybe...

I don't see AOL using the title Miss USA anywhere?? The link I clicked onto to read about this story said Miss Mexico? You all have way to much time on your hands if you're worrying about incorrect titles to stories. Maybe it's time to get back to work huh? :)

Still, just the fact that Mexico is so highly covered in America. I can live my life without learning about a dress some pageant participate from another country rejected. We might as well be an extension of Mexico here. That is basically what we are turning into. I can live in this country getting everything I need in Mexican style Spanish.

Oops I put participate for participant. This is the corrected comment:

Jeff, WTF are you smoking?? Where does it call her Miss USA? There is an analogy that refers to what the equivalent would be for Miss USA, but maybe you are too stupid to understand that. Well, maybe you are as stupid as you are ignorant. (BTW, since the difference is probably over your redneck head, get some smart Asian to explain it to you.)
As for the dress, I wouldn't wear the ugly thing either, who cares what the pictures are. The bullet belt, though? I want one ASAP!
