Styles that Stick: Fur
Filed under: Fashion, Best of the Season, Designers & Brands
Fur gets a bad rap from activists and animal lovers alike, but that hasn't slowed fur down one bit. No matter how much "blood" gets thrown on them by angry PETA protesters, fur coats will never go out of style. Fur coats and their other fashionable counterparts have been associated with wealth, class, and success for centuries. Fur was first used in prehistoric times for obvious reasons like warmth and protection – but they were also used for fashion and adornment. During the Middle Ages fur was used mainly for fashion purposes and was seen as a symbol for wealth and class affiliation. In those times fur was being used for coats, shawls, cuffs, and even on the hems of gowns.
Today luxury labels like Dior, Fendi and Gucci use fur in their designs, and we all know what class of women can afford those. For those of us who want the look of fur without harming animals or paying the massive price tag, there are plenty of "faux" choices out there for us that look pretty darn real. One of my favorites is this faux fur swing coat from Juicy Couture.
Styledashers, what do you wear: faux fur or the real deal?

Let these animals live! Designers make more than enough money. Animals are killed in horrific ways, all in the name of fashion.

That's CRAP! Mudering animals for "fashion" is greedy and cruel. Now a days we have faux fur that looks just like the real deal!!!

What kind of person feels comfortable in the skin of a formerly living creature that feels pain just as we do, who values it's life just as we do. What kind of person is this? On the other hand, someone who shuns this practice is likely to be very kind and compassionate.

Anyone that stands for PETA obviously doesn't understand what it really represents.

Nothing makes a woman less attractive than a dead animal around her shoulders. How shallow and disgusting.

Fur is beautiful BUT, I agree the faux stuff is just as great looking and warm and WAY more affordable. That's what I always buy. That way, when I get a ketchup stain on it, it's not such a big deal!

I don't think style or wealth when I see someone walking around cloaked in dead animals. I see a spoiled, selfish piece of crap person who could not care less about the suffering of these animals. It's not attractive - these people only do it for the attention. I live in the north, and I can tell you there are plenty of other coats that allow you to stay warm. My hope is that the wearers of these coats have to spend eternity being made into a coat themselves for all of the animals they had killed.

I'm a hunter and I hate to waste the fur and just eat the meat so I make stuff out of the skins. Does this offend the PETA crybabies?

Faux pollutes. Faux takes dozens of years to breakdown. Now fur,has been around and will be around for eons. What kind of person would wear fur? Every kind of person imaginable! Want to help wildlife? Buy a hunting/fishing license.

Not only do you have to worry about the people wearing the fur, how about all those muskrats that are killed for their fur and the muck to make all those perfumes that have the name of muck in them? Those little critters really get used up. A full muskrat coat will cost you about $3500.

Many years ago when I was in my twenties, in a Pathmark Super Market in Wilmington Delaware, I witnessed a woman about thirty, (hippie type) berating a woman who had to be on the better side of eighty, for wearing a fur coat. The hippie started really laying into this poor old woman, to this day I regret not stepping up to the plate, and telling hippie bitch to back the f*ck off. If I ever see this again there will be a fight with me and hippie bitch and I will beat hippie bitches ass!!!
