America's Next Top Model is a flop
Filed under: Fashion, News, Runway Report
We are on -- what? the seventh or is it the eighth? -- season of America's Next Top Model? Out of all of those seasons, I have yet to see any "top models" come out of the show. Apparently I am not the only one who feels this way. In this week's Answer Bitch section on eOnline, a reader asks the question about the "Tyra curse" and why her models never seem to get any work after the show.
Answer Bitch went to his big time fashion industry insiders and got this juicy nugget for us:
Answer Bitch went to his big time fashion industry insiders and got this juicy nugget for us:
The fashion industry doesn't take the show seriously. Clients are finicky about choosing their own faces. People like to select their own girls, and to be handed a girl that someone else has deemed fabulous -- that equation doesn't really work out."
Makes total sense. That's like me telling Anna Wintour to take my fashion advice instead of using her own instincts. Sure I have some great advice but Anna doesn't want to hear that crap.

That empty, worthless, boring program has been a flop since it's first day. What a freaking waste of TV & the boneheads at Viacom/MTV-VH1 play repeats of this crap. They just whine, b*tch, skip rope, etc., just like the newest version of this nonsense- Crowned. The posing is a scant part of the show. Please contact them & ask them to forget this junk & actually think up a show worth putting on TV! How can we voice our opinion to CW & Viacom-VH1/MTV? Inquiring minds want to know!

I've enjoyed ANTM for the last few years. I will admit its starting to get redundant and I don't watch it as much as I useto. I'm not surprise the fashion industry does take the show seriously. But I don't think that's a problem, and I don't think it makes the show deceptive. Its a contest, a reality TV show, and the contestants and the people who watch the show should understand that, and not take it so seriously. As to changing the name--look at it this way--although some people who have won American Idol have been sucessful, none of the winners have ever really been America's Idol. No one asks Fox to change the name of that show. What's different here? There are no short cuts for experience in life! You can't go on TV with no experience, win a contest on TV and think your life is set. Its unrealistic. What these shows do is give exposure to people who probably wouldn't have got it otherwise. After their 15 minutes of fame, its their job to take it further. Don't put that on Tyra.

I have watched every cycle of ANTM. I think it is an excellent show. It shows girls how to be a successful model and the things that clients look for. People think it is easy being a model, but this show demonstrates the opposite. It shows just how hard the modeling agency can be. It can help girls determine if modeling is what they really want to do. If they still do, it shows them different ways they can get an agency to notice them. I think that Tyra and her producers should keep it up and continue doing top model. Ive seen girls that haven't won top model and still got deals with modeling agencies. You say that agencies like to search for their own talent. They are, they are just getting a little help. And the girls are just getting a little more publicity to make their dreams happen. There is nothing wrong or boring about ANTM. For you who think otherwise, don't know what you are talking about.

Crowned is actually to help paegent mothers learn the difficulties and the pressure of being in a paegent and feeling the weight they put on their daughters shoulders when their daughters compete but both teams learn teamwork to work with their mothers/ daughters.

Also, since the real fashion indistry doesn't take the show seriously, the show should change its name- it's a lie & deceptive. It seems like going on the show kills young women's carreers, not helps. The title is a lie, and the show is vacuous & not worth an existance. Women go on the show, probably hoping this will help, and it destroys their carreer. TV douesn't have enoug ideas, never mind good ideas, so they have to put crap on instead

Harry, I wouldn't mind Megan, she's probably a preteen. so easily offended, and they probably enjoy the drama.

Harry,
Everything and everyone you are fighting aganist is pointless for you. You are getting nowhere with it, and not only are you making your self look like an ass, you are now making yourself a hypocrite:
"Me thinks we all can share our views.. it's called free speech. You also show your loose thinking, since I am not *plotting*, and to call it the best show EVER is absolutely wrong. . . Maybe you are the one who should do something betterwith your life than telling others to shut up because they don't agree with you, and saying it's the best TV progrram ever (that's about 40, going on 50 years of TV on hundreds of channels, BTW), and falsely claiming I am plotting when I share my views, just like others can share theirs, even you..."
You were saying that you're all about free speach and sharing views, yet you go off on her by saying she is in the wrong because she thinks its the best show and you think quite differently. You can't sit there and bitch about one's opinion, when you are forcing your own on everyone else, making everyone that disagrees with you completely wrong, and you 100% correct.
You are right, it is the freedom of speech, and that is all you seem to be right about without coming across as an arrogant ass.

Maybe. But if they're working in other countries, doesn't that mean they are not AMERICA'S top model, but someone else's? Though if I see the show's name changed to "The World's Next Top Model" I'm sure I won't be the only one thinking they've gone too far.
I've never bothered watching the show personally though I've seen way too many advertisements for it with clips and I agree with what has been said: The concept doesn't sound like it necessarily carries over into the real modeling industry and unless the show's producers intend to carry these women through the industry and arrange for work for them it doesn't sound like the show is actually delivering its namesake. And yet we have "Make Me a Supermodel" coming onto the air now; something that seems even -less- likely.
And what is with Tyra? We've all heard her awful poetry (usually clips on shows making fun of it). She's unattractive without a lot of makeup and the more that we hear her speak instead of just pose the more we realize she has nothing but sawdust in her head and an enormous ego.

isn't the winner of the first one of the judges. twiggy? i thought it was.
meghan 1-01-2008 @ 11:11AM
i love ANTM! so shut up harry. you should probably figure out something better to do with your life rather than plotting up a way to get rid of the best show ever!

Twiggy is NOT the winner of the first season, that was Adrian Curry who is now married to Christopher Knight (Peter from the Brady Bunch).
Twiggy was a "Top Model" back in the 70s.
Sorry to add here, there was no link to post this response above!!
Harry 1-01-2008 @ 11:56AM
Megan- so if I don't agree with you, I should shut up? That is poor thinking. Me thinks we all can share our views.. it's called free speech. You also show your loose thinking, since I am not *plotting*, and to call it the best show EVER is absolutely wrong. There are shows with better plots, etc., and better done than ANTM, and the FASHION industry KNOWS this. Maybe you are the one who should do something betterwith your life than telling others to shut up because they don't agree with you, and saying it's the best TV progrram ever (that's about 40, going on 50 years of TV on hundreds of channels, BTW), and falsely claiming I am plotting when I share my views, just like others can share theirs, even you..

rite on meghan! harry, your dumb. antm is an interesting show with intrique and drama. besides...your a boy...can we girls really expect you to enjoy a show about modeling? if you think its so bad, dont watch it and dont read articles about it!duh!
Maya Papaya 1-01-2008 @ 11:18AM
Actually, I have seen Adrienne around, and Naema, I believe was on a bare minerals make up commercial. Yes, you don't really see these models around so much, but what models that aren't diseased with fame DO you see in the media on a daily basis. Most of these models worked in small-time agencies before hand, and then shifted for more recognition into AMNT. Tyra Banks is a fashion icon, and so is Twiggy (who by the way is -not- one of the contest winners, she's actually a pioneer in the modeling business), and there are many main stream agencies laced into the show. However, it is true the show blows the whole prize thing out of porportion. It's T.V., what do you expect?

The show is kind of addicting. I'll innocently turn over to MTV to see what's on and for the next five hours I'm watching an ANTM marathon. I don't care anything about fashion, but I just find the personalities interesting. Tyra's a crazy old bat, but disregard her, and it's an ok show. My favorite girl usually comes in second{Mercedez, Kahlen, etc.}, but you can't have everything.

Also, on that note, Toccara, who didn't even win, hosts a show now. She's modeled for Black Men magazine, and such. You can't expect to be worshipped in seconds.

Yes you do see the models around; i personally think that Adrienne Curry is the most successful model that came from ANTM, because she is already getting miillion dollar deals with playboy and so on. Eva is the next model to follow in Adrienne steps because she is on t.v. shows music videos an she is even mentioned in songs. Danielle and Carridee (i think that is how you spell her name) are doing commercials for covergirl and Jaslene is the new face of Lot29 and even has her own billboard in Manhattan. You cannot expect these girls to automatically become the next Gemma Ward or Adrianna Lima, over night. It takes times, not even Tyra Banks became an overnight sensation; she was rejected numerous times before she made it big.
