From red carpet to your closet: Penelope Cruz at the 2008 Oscars

Filed under: CELEBRITY STYLE, Fashion, Celebrity, Best of the Season, Red Carpet

Penelope Cruz has no problem taking risks with fashion, and often, for her, that means playing with a variety of fabrics. This year's Oscars gown was no exception -- she had a plethora of feathers adorning her gown, and managed to make it work.

Now, I'm not about to recommend you start sporting a feather boa. In fact, I'm telling you straight up -- don't do it. However, there are lessons to be learned from P. Cruz's ensemble -- mere mortals can experiment with a variety of fabrics and adornments, especially when it's for a special occasion.
  • (Faux) fur -- Consider going luxe with a faux fur trim on your sweater or coat. You don't need to opt for a full fur coat, by any means -- a little bit can go a long way.
  • Feather in your cap -- Hats are definitely hot, and you can certainly push the limits by topping your mop with something fun. You don't need to opt for a foot-long feather in a fedora, but look at feathers and other fabrics to adorn your hair.
  • Tie up some tassels -- You can snag the look of the swagged fabric at Penelope's waist with a scarf; preferably one with fringe or tassels for added movement. The key is to keep it from pulling tight -- it should create fluid movement around your hips to add sex appeal.
