Analyzing Hilary Clinton's style

At Styledash we tend to keep things light. We talk style and not politics. But, sometimes the two worlds collide. When they're even talking about how bad Hilary Clinton's clothes are all the way over in the U.K., it's time that Styledash took notice too.

Sure, her style is a little conservative. I can understand that -- she's got a base of voters that she wants to cater to. But conservative doesn't necessarily have to mean masculine. Remember cleavage-gate? When Hilary showed just the slightest hint of cleavage, the world freaked out. Since then she's worn nothing but full coverage suits.

Does it really matter what Hilary wears?Well, I say yes. And no, not because fashion is essentially important in a would be, could be future president. What is important is the way people responds to what she wears. The fact that Hil's clothes are such a big deal, while nobody gives a second thought to McCain's suits just continues to highlight the fact that even a woman vying for the highest position of power will still be judged on her appearance. Yet, men continue to get off easy. Sure, we do expect our male presidents to look trim and fit and overall come across as strong and healthy. But, no one talks about what kind of leader they are based on their clothes. There's still that idea that if a women looks too feminine she won't be perceived as strong -- hence Hilary's never ending stream of pant suits.

Hilary avoids looking too stylish because she doesn't want to ruin her credibility with voters (which is the reason she turned down the Vogue shoot). If she looks as if she cares too much about her appearance people will start crying that she's too vain or too focused on lipstick to be caring about the world's toughest issues. If she looks as if she doesn't care about her appearance, people immediately pick her image apart. It's a no win situation no matter what she wears, sadly to say.
