We love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.Meet blugrn design, a line of clever, modern jewelry and accessories for girls and guys. Combining natural elements like fossilized shells and shark's teeth with sterling silver, this collection is truly unique.
Tell us a little about your work. I was raised in Houston Texas and lived there for most of my life until I got married and moved to D.C. over 3 years ago. While I was doing my masters in architecture I took an elective course in jewelry... and I've been making stuff ever since. My company is named after our little blue green planet... and the fact that it is also my favorite color.
How did you get started doing this as a business? I started designing websites and decided I should make my own website, and I started to include some of the items that I would make in my spare time. Eventually it started to take up most of my time... I was accepted into my first big show last year which gave me a lot of incentive to continue to do what I do.
Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Create create create...try to come up with new and different things all the time...even if you think it's weird or too funky. People like different. What inspires your work? Everything... most of the time it's the overlooked ubiquitous items that we see everyday. I.E. braille... its everywhere and few people appreciate its simple beauty and disguised meaning.
Who are your favorite designers? There are so many... especially on etsy... I love fashion designers Phillip Lam and Elle Saab... as for jewelry I love Anthony Nak.
What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Must haves... yikes... if it's beautiful and unique... I must have it. I love cuffs, colorful coin purses and pretty much anything gold and sparkly. ;)

Anything else? I opened up a new etsy store this year...inspired by my new little boston terrier pup, El Guapo. It's puppy themed jewelry, notecards and baby goodies. www.mooshygooshies.etsy.com
