How skimpy is too skimpy for a prom dress?

Sexy prom dresses: Too much skin for high school?

It's prom season once again, and, chances are, you've noticed local high school students pulling out all the stops for the "best night of their lives." Those of you who went to prom can attest to how completely disappointing this high-dollar celebration usually turns out to be -- however, this doesn't stop teenagers from trying to desperately out-do one another year after year.

Take Marche Taylor, for instance. The high school senior from Houston, TX wore this, um, less-than-conservative dress to her high school formal -- or, at least, she tried. After school officials caught sight of the barely-there evening wear, they barred the 17-year-old from the premises -- and eventually had her handcuffed by police when she refused to leave.

OK, let's be honest: Marche totally looks like a hooker in this outfit. But does it matter? It's been (*cough cough*) a few years since our prom, so maybe times have changed -- however, it used to be that tacky, over-the-top dresses were the norm. So sure, this is pretty skanky looking, but we're not sure it's inappropriate for the occasion.

I wouldn't have let her in dressed like that either but, they should have at least let her go home, change, and then let her in. Only giving her the "go to jail or go homel" option was a little harsh.

I wonder though, how did she get out of the house like this? Was mom even involved in this dress choice?

All I can say on this matter is, Did the school tell them what they could or could not wear? If they did not have some kind of guide lines set up, then they really could not say anything to her. She will probably sue them because of this also. When I went to prom in 1992 and 1993, they did not tell us what we could or could not wear.

Okay. Three comments here. No where does it indicate that she didn't have the option of returning home, changing, and coming back to the prom in something more acceptable. She was given the "go home or go to jail" ultimatum when she refused to depart in what she was wearing at that time. There is nothing "harsh" about that.
Secondly, to the person that stated, "if they did not have some kind of guidelines set up, then there is nothing they could say to her." WRONG. There are no guidelines at my job that say I can't walk in wearing a belly shirt (I'm a man) or no pants, however, I still know I can't walk in that way! Give me a break. Finally, to you racist bigots using this forum to show your hate filled ignorance here, go back to your trailers, you're an embarrasement to the rest of us and to yourselves.

Since her parent(s) were obviously unable to determine what was inappropriate for a school function, I feel the school had no choice but to step in and tell her no.

I agree that she should have been given the option to go and change. I have a feeling that things got heated and words exchanged which lead to escalation of getting the police involved. However, the Fashion Police really should have arrested her for that gawdawful getup.

I work at a business that hires entry level people and most of the applicants are female. I honestly believe that young people today have no clue how to dress appropriately in the adult world. These girls show up looking like hookers wearing half a bottle of perfume. They need a class at school!

Black teenage whoe. This outfit tells you all what you want to know about her. Drug, alcohol and men...she uses all of those every day.
And no option to go change. She is old enough to have known better.

well, it's clear that you're a racist. If the young lady in the dress ( or lack thereof ) would have been WHITE..

It would have made no difference as to the lack of CLASS, STYLE OR, TASTE. The dress is a disgrace to all women. No matter what color she happens to be.
Choose your words more carefully next time. Race should not play a part in having SELF RESPECT.

I wonder what you would say if someone described your daughter in that manner regardless of race. It's very easy to be cruel when you have hidden issues yourself.... Advice- Find a Good Therapist to deal with your issues either they be physical; about men who abused you; women; race or any other short comings that satan has convienced you that you have to allow you to be ignorant and mean spirited.... Have at it on the reply to this response, as I won't continue this with you.. I just had to bust your bubble sweetie..... Well, the SCHOOL has the right to lay down the rules -- and they did, in writing, in advance of the prom.

Anyone who has such a poor grasp of the English language shouldn't be allowed to graduate from high school, meaning she'd have another shot at a senior prom next year. Seriously. At least...I would hope so. Expecting perfect spelling and grammar is unreasonable, but THAT was atrocious. Seriously. High school graduation standards *should* be significantly higher than that.

And I would hope she'd think enough of herself to expend this time and energy on improving her education instead of wasting it by parading myself around in the media. If my verbal skills were so poor as what is demonstrated on that myspace page, I certainly wouldn't want to draw so much attention to myself. I'd much prefer to improve myself....for ME.
