How did you get the inspiration to start Artworks Jewelry? When I made the decision to leave my corporate marketing career I finally came back to what I probably should have been doing all along! I've always had a love of handmade items – from early years working for my mother in her fine craft gallery. I enjoyed meeting the artisans and craftspeople and selling their work – helping a customer find a beautiful work of art, and being a part of that artisan's success. I have also always had a love of jewelry and feel that wearing unique, handcrafted jewelry and accessories is one way that women can express their own uniqueness as well as show appreciation for design and craftsmanship. I wanted to create an online boutique that helped women do that by offering artistic, wearable jewelry from some of the most creative and talented independent designers.

How do you go about finding new designers to carry and what do you look for in the work you put in your shop? Since the jewelry I carry is inspired by the natural world and has a contemporary feel, I look for new designers whose work has a modern, yet earthy, aesthetic. I find new artists many different ways: shows, online and print publications, designers contacting me directly, and designers who I already carry recommending others. Ultimately, I consider designers who create jewelry that is unique, wearable, and allows my customers to express their personal sense of style.

Who are your favorite designers? I truly love all of the work that I carry on my site, but I think I'll pick the jewelry artists that are in my hometown of Portland, Oregon: Melissa Stiles of Stubborn Jewelry (very modern, wearable pieces made with opaque resins and industrial metals), Lisa Gastelum of TQB Designs (incredible handcrafted beaded-bead jewelry), and Jessica Lee of Jessica Lee Designs (organic and beautiful natural sea glass and sterling silver jewelry).

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I have always loved great accessories. My fashion must-haves include: A great pair of jeans, too many shoes, stylish eyeglasses and, of course, incredible handcrafted jewelry! My only beauty must-have is boring, but important: sunscreen.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? While your craft is about making your inspiration come to life through the creative process, being successful in business requires a different set of skills – so learn as much as you can about running a business. A skilled artisan who is also a skilled businessperson will be successful. Also, as you design jewelry I think it is important to have an artistic vision, but always keep in mind what is important to your customers.
