Many of us women out there suffer during the summer because we don't have stems like a supermodel. Unfortunately, you can't think your legs long but you can create the illusion that they're a mile long with the right clothes. So let's put an end to your suffering and take a look at some helpful hints to getting Rockette worthy gams.
Let's start at the top, literally:
• The trick to creating the illusion (with any piece of clothing) is to streamline the look. The last thing you want to do is cut yourself up and right out proportion. Therefore, tops that end at the waist (cropped) or hip are a no-no while those that hit below the hips are an automatic ding-ding-ding! Today tunics are rampant and perfect for this notion.
• Opt for vertical stripes instead of horizontal. You don't want people's eyes going back and forth but rather up and down. V-necks are also a great way to draw the eye this way.
• It's also as much about balance as much as it is tricking the eye. If you're wearing some new LiLo leggings on the bottom, opt for something roomier (don't forget hip length) on top.
• As for coats, go slightly lower than hip length or longer. Investing in a trench is ideal because they never go out of style and will add length to any look.
Now for the bottom:
• The vertical stripes method works here too.
• Make sure that your shoes and socks are similar in hue to your pants. This avoids breaking the line at the ankle and allows it continue down to the toe.
• Try to steer clear of prints on the bottom. Keeping tones similar will create a color block and an illusion of length. Why else did you think J. Lo does monochrome so often?
• If you are capable of rocking a mini, keep it simple. Don't go for tiers that will chop up the hip area. A mini and a heel is a killer way to fake Gisele's as we like to call them.
• Trouser pants, bootcuts and flared pants are your best friends. The high-waisted craze is also right up your alley. Don't be scared – if worn correctly they will definitely make your stems look lengthy.
Just shoe it:
• Heels, heels, heels! Enough said.
• Pointed heels work to elongate even more so.
• Beware of the ankle strap if you have on a leg baring bottom. It can cut you off at the ankles and will go completely against our trickery *gasp*. If you've gotta do it, go with a nude shoe that will continue the color of the leg into the shoe, creating a streamlined look.
• Knee boots lend a helping hand if you're wearing a bottom that flirts with the knee area.
Tis the season:
• We know you didn't want to go here but we're going. There are some swimsuits that help and others that hurt. The more high cut the suit, the better you are. Many of the sexy one piece styles out right now have the perfect elongating features like a high cut and v-neck line.
• A bikini bottom that ties on the side also doesn't cut the eye off at the hip but allows it to continue onward.
• Though boy shorts are often recommended for a pear shape, if you aren't Mischa Barton skinny, they make legs look shorter.
