Maxi-dress reality check
Filed under: Fashion, News, Best of the Season

Perhaps you've been reading all over the blogosphere, including here, about how great the maxi-dress is, and how it can be worn by everyone from small to tall, narrow to wide and everyone in between.
We call Shenanigans. This style is a trojan horse, a trick to get you to buy something unflattering just because it is new and comfortable.Oh, if you're tall and skinny, enjoy. Like 90% of fashion, this look was made just. for. you. Also great if you are pregnant. For the tall, skinny, pregnant super models reading this, congratulations, and sorry that you have so few friends. We're just jealous.
For the rest of us, beware the long, full, untailored skirt! It will add pounds to your poochie belly! It will create visual wideness around your hips! It will stumpy-stumperson your less than long legs! Maxi-dresses are not your friend.
Except, well, there is one situation in which this dress style works for everyone.
If you really just can't or don't want to wear underwear, for whatever reason, then a maxi-dress makes sense. Go for it. Enjoy the breeze, but take care when you're exiting cars. There are photographers everywhere!

I was trying on dresses the other day, and I picked out one that looked cute and trendy, but when I put it on, I SWEAR TO GOD IT WAS A MUU MUU! I took it off immediately, but I couldn't help but worry about anyone who might have purchased such a thing without trying it on first. It was very deceptive and traumatizing.
