Stila review: kajal eyeliner

Filed under: Fashion, Beauty, Makeup, Designers & Brands

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

We are heavy eyeliner users, both figuratively and literally, so we've experienced the full gamut of textures: waxy, smudgy, crumbling and smooth. Based on this broad experience, we feel confident in our definitive pronouncement that Stila Kajal Eyeliner is the silkiest pencil we've ever used.

Now before you think we're a pushover for free stuff, let us say that super silky can be a good and bad thing.
The first thing we thought, while applying the (nicely dark) sooty black, was that this is a tool for an experienced user.

It goes on so smoothly and so quickly that a nervous or shaky hand will make a tragic mess out of it, fast. But hey, we always say, that's what makeup remover pads are for: trial and error.

We tried black, white and "emerald" green. All of the colors stayed pretty vivid, even when we smudged them up and over our lids. The green was a surprisingly wearable color, more flattering than flashy, and worked very well as a smudgy background to black liquid liner on the base of our lashes.

The white was almost too white and opaque and fake. There are other "brighteners" we like better for the whole inside corner of the eye thing, so it works best a gimmick color, like for that 80s party you're so planning for this summer.

Overall judgment: For $16.50, we'll spend our own money to buy black again, we'll use the green as long as it lasts, and pass on the white.
