Women's wear from Skaparinn

Filed under: Fashion, Beauty, News, Best of the Season

Chic and streamlined, tailored women's wear from Skaparinn is demure, as in modest, but with a bold, seductive quality. The collection's designer, Dusa, studied fashion design at the Vienna Applied Arts University, graduating in 2000.

She apprenticed with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Viktor & Rolf before founding Skaparinn, Icelandic for, "the creator". Although not yet available stateside, the Skaparinn online store launches in July. Or pop by the Skaparinn boutique at V/Skalholtsstig, in the 101 neighborhood, near Reykjavik's city center.

For f/w '08 Dusa looked to Hedy Lemarr for inspiration. She was a big time movie star, a not quite forgotten icon from the '30s, who is credited with a major scientific invention; and also known for the first ever, female orgasm in a feature film.

Generally, Skaparinn takes its identity from the natural landscape of Iceland, beauty through simplicity. This is evident in a small bath collection including fragrances for men and women, bath salts and soaps. Likewise, the garments are not necessarily complex designs but more about refined technique. There's volume and geometry just by virtue of the pattern, design that creates the garment but still has the taste to let the garment breathe. Part of the enjoyment is the simple gestures in the design to create this illusion, as masked by near flawless construction.

Overall, the work comes off as well made and well designed. The resulting style is a sophisticated type of woman, that's clever and complex, powerful and restrained, but still knows how to kick it.
