Socks+sandals: Alexander McQueen pairs the unthinkable
Filed under: Accessories, Fashion, News
Our world is officially rocked. If men are pulling off pantyhose (or mantyhose) these days, then it's hard to really fault someone for pairing sock with sandals (if you can call them sandals) -- especially when it actually looks good. Not wear it out in public good, mind you, but good in that 'wow that doesn't even really look offensive' kind of way. Actually, we think they look like some sort of couture bowling shoes.
McQueen is the master of committing fashion heresy to get his shows in the news. Somehow, it seems like he's is always throwing weird combinations at us that we can't quite categorize. Just like his necktie-speedo, this footwear begs for a new type of classification. Is it an incomplete shoe? Or an over-engineered sandal?
Maybe it's time for a the hybrid shoe-sandal (shoedal?) to have a proper place in the world of footwear. Still, the hard part is deciding whether it's really OK to wear socks. Because of the intense stigma attached, we've never tried the socks+sandals combo. Does feel as wrong as it looks?

Wow. Those would make me doubly concerned about choosing the right pair of socks.

Five years ago when I was in Alaska it was the norm to see folks in their Birkenstocks with socks on. And it was summer time. McQueen is sorely behind times.

just because it's a norm doesn't make it right!!!! Why do men think it's alright to wear socks with sandals? Ditch the socks or just ditch the sandals altogether!....and please do not, I repeat DO NOT wear socks with flip flops....

jzc1022, you are right, this is not groundbreaking. Here on Long Island socks and birks are very much in style, and have been for some time.

Sock It To Me 7-30-2008 @ 9:03PM
Sandals work for me because they keep my feet cool in the summer. Socks work for me because they prevent chafing against the sandal straps and keep my feet from perspiring as well as clean. You don't like the combination, Mr. or Ms Fashion Policeperson?" Then don't look at my feet, and I won't look at yours. Alternatively, you can go to hell.

Ewww! I am a shoe queen. I love great shoes and great fashion and somtimes things that are slightly funny looking like MBT trainers are quirky cute..but socks with sandals are hideous. I love shopping at shoes.com as they run great sales. I shop through an online shopping mall that tells you the secret promo codes and then give you between 5 -50% back in cash at about 300 stores including Macy's sephora, shoes.com, Old Navy, Target (so fabulous) and diapers.com amongst others. The site is http://www.fatcrumbs.com

Sheesh, you people sure do get fired up about things. Personally, I don't want to see people's feet when I'm out, but I don't mind open-toe shoes. It even seems to me that the reasoning behind socks with sandals is completely sound. Cooler for the feet but no chafing or perspiration. Then again, I've never cared for fashion rules, but I could never understand someone that would judge you so harshly over something so seemingly mundane.

Those shoes pictured strike me as incomplete bowling shoes not sandals. They need socks. Oh what people will call fashion.

Bad taste in wearing sox with sandals? How about the way people are taking to trashy, low-class ways of speaking -- such as saying, "Pleased to meet you" ? An expression always used by the trashier, low class people one would never have personally been introduced to. People who pronounced it as "Pleased ta meetcha". Every time I hear "pleased to meet you", I cringe.

The shoe/sandal is just ghastly. It's like saddle-shoes for porn stars or something. Peep-toe pumps are one thing, but peep-instep saddle-shoes? Just no.
