Indie Designer Interviews: Spontaneity Crochet Accessories
Filed under: Accessories, Fashion, News
We love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.Today we'd like to introduce you to designer Tara Johnson who creates custom-designed, handcrafted crochet accessories. Her line, Spontaneity, is full of funky, bohemian goodies that are totally affordable and sure to set you apart from the crowd.
Tell us a little about yourself and your work. Spontaneity is a Chicago-based company that specializes in custom-designed handcrafted crochet accessories. Spontaneity is committed to creating quality products that will meet your unique sense of style and expression, so whether you are a bohemian beauty, sophisticated sista, or funky fashionista - we've got something for you!
In fact, under the Customize tab on the website , there is a neat little interactive function that allows you to design your product and order it right off of the page!
How did you get started as a designer? Very spontaneously, actually - hence the name! :-) A few years ago, I decided to take up a new hobby and randomly chose crocheting. Since I didn't know of many young people who were crocheting at the time, I thought it would be cool to take up such a unique craft. My love for funky jewelry and accessories lead me to experiment with different types of products (i.e. scarves, hats, earrings), but it wasn't until I started receiving compliments from both friends and strangers that I realized that my work was quality and that people would actually buy it! :-)
Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? I'm a relatively new designer/entrepreneur, but my experience thus far has taught me that believing in yourself/your product and surrounding yourself with positive, like-minded people who believe in you/your product as well are KEY. There are tons of talented people in the world who can make awesome products and/or have great service ideas, but you have to have confidence, courage, and persistence in order to be an entrepreneur- it's not easy! It really helped for me to network with existing designers to get ideas on how to build and market my company, but also to encourage me to make it happen! What inspires your work? I am inspired by nature, culture, random people or things that I see in passing, but mostly the fashion styles of my mom and late godmother - they are the jazziest chicks I've ever met in my life!
Who are your favorite designers? I admire the work of indie folks like Afya Ibomu, Enstrumental, and Xukuma - I appreciate designers who strive to be different and can create a niche in their respective markets.
What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I am an accessory and jewelry freak, so I've got to have "big-n-banging" earrings and eclectic bags/clutches. I'm pretty low-key when it comes to make-up, but I cannot LIVE without Too Faced Lash Injection mascara. Lastly, I love the natural beauty products of Oyin Handmade.
Where can people find your work? You can find my work at www.spon-taneity.com. Thanks in advance for your support! :-)
