Vogue's "Black Issue" is a hit
Vogue's "Black Issue," literally flew off the shelves. It was sold out around the world in a matter of days after it's release, and the company actually reprinted more issues in order to meet the demand. The message to the fashion world was sent loud and clear -- we want more diversity and we are ready for it, now!Italian Vogue, along with sister publications American Vogue and French Vogue, is quite obviously one of the most influential magazines in fashion. So will this black issue make a difference?
Industry insiders are excited, but not terribly hopeful. Booking agent Carlos Ojedas says, "All the agents were happy about the issue because it gives us hope that other people will catch on and decide that it's OK to use more black girls. It's OK to have more than just one, and she doesn't have to always be Naomi."
But, he's still skeptical, "I hate to sound cynical, but by January, I feel like it will be back to business as usual. I want to be hopeful and positive, but a part of me does not want to get my hopes up."
We have our fingers crossed that the sale of this issue will translate into more models of color being regular features in all Vogue publications and even into more African American/Asian/Hispanic models on the runway come fashion week. For now, all we can do is wait and see what happens.

Hopefully, the success of the Italian Vogue Black Issue will prove to be a catalyst for more diversity in other publications, and on the runway.
