Indie Designer Interviews: Spinach N Peace
Filed under: News
We love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.Today's interview is with artist Lauren Gehr of Spinach N Peace. Lauren designs beautiful journals to inspire the written word in addition to her other artistic endeavors of painting, photography and mixed media artwork.
Tell us a little about yourself and your work. I'm a displaced Floridian living in New York City. Learning to love the winters, I paint, do mixed media and my recent passion is journals. I started by decorating store-bought journals, but recently I have been making my own from scratch (like cookies!).
How did you get started as a designer? At the age of 3 my aunt equipped me with a paintbrush and told me to go wild. Ever since she's been encouraging me to always explore my creative side. It's been a part of my life off and on since then. I returned intensely to painting while in law school, because God knows I needed the outlet after 12 hour study groups!
What inspires your work? My environment is my main source of inspiration. I'm very influenced by my environment. I draw upon colors found in my surroundings, organic shapes and such. My earlier work is full of bold and intense colors. The tropical influence of Miami is evident. My more recent work is more serious, influenced by New York City.Who are your favorite designers? I love indie designers and am always trying to support my fellow Etsy sellers. Whenever I need anything, I first turn to Etsy. I love to discover new designers there.
What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I rarely part with my comfy cardigans. There's nothing like a worn in, perfectly snug cardigan. Once I find one that fits me well, I get it in all colors.
A mild fragrance-free soap is a must-have for people with sensitive skin like me!
Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Always make time for your passion-it will make you a happier person.
