Kai Kühne studio visit
When we visited Kai Kühne at his garment district studio, he was busy with fittings for a S/S '09 runway presentation only 48 hours away (more like 30 as this publishes).
What do we say about Kai? His shows are so dramatic and beautiful. The style is downtown and really tough women's wear. But, it's not regular, rocker style. It's more uptown goes downtown, targeting a mature women who still sizzles.
As seen in this photo series, he fits the models as they can confirm appointments, between other shows and fittings; then works with a design team of pattern makers, sewers, and associate designers to get each piece tailored perfectly. For the big, seasonal show, Kühne collaborates with stylist Avena Gallagher and art director Alex Wiederin. With a new business partner in the mix--Markus Hoefels, the original backer of Proenza Schouler--there's lots of new designs planned for this season but we're sworn to secrecy until after the show. Lydia Hearst hosts an after party at The Rose Club at The Plaza.
