Duckie Brown backstage

We chatted with Duckie Brown co-designers Daniel Silver and Steven Cox (l to r), backstage at New York Fashion Week before their S/S '09 men's wear collection at Bryant Park. Their last collection repositioned Duckie Brown away from the flamboyant color palette that had been part of their signature.

Instead, F/W offered a nuanced take on a seemingly all black palette that was really blue-black, grey-black, yellow-black and every other black variation possible. It's a sophisticated approach, an employment of tone rather than color, that we expect other designers to be ripping off, err, we mean, inspired by. Along with Ralph and Calvin, DB was nominated for a 2007 CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Men's Wear.

S/S picked up right where F/W had left off. Cox said, "We have a look. I want to evolve, we have to keep moving." Silver echoed that, "People don't want you to do the same thing. But, they don't want you to change." To their credit, Silver and Cox seem to have their fingers on all the right buttons. And we super-dig those specs.
