Brian Lichtenberg's Spring 2009 collection fuses space age with sex appeal

L.A. designer Brian Lichtenberg is fiercely independent, beloved by offbeat musicians like M.I.A. and Santogold, and the undisputed auteur of avant-garde unitards and hologram leggings. And at his Spring/Summer 2009 show, held during Los Angeles Fashion Week, Lichtenberg expanded on his favorite themes while adding some new staples to his repertoire.

This season, Lichtenberg used lace to create geometric patchwork on loose-fitting tanks for men and banded minidresses for women. His freewheeling, androgynous approach to nudity -- a nipple here, a bottom there -- was also in full effect.

Unisex sequined and zippered vests, pants for men with a utilitarian, Han Solo-ish flap at the knee, and brightly-colored mesh and spandex bodysuits for women were some of the new innovations Lichtenberg offered for next spring.

But our very favorite item on the runway was the purple, bandage micro-mini. In a My Little Pony-meets-punk-rock touch, the skirt featured bondage straps lined with puffs of multi-colored tulle. Leave it Lichtenberg to make our inner five-year-old and 15-year-old swoon at the same time.
