The Look for Less: Celebrity It-Bags
One thing the economy isn't affecting? Celeb's access to the season's hottest handbags. But since the rest of us are feeling the pinch in our own pocketbooks, Stylelist asked Pam Peckerman to hunt down similar bargain bags that will help you look chic but feel smart.

This is jet-set style done right. Eva Mendes sizzles in head-to-toe Burberry, including a stunning, hardware detailed shoulder bag, that looks like it's held together with staples.
Burberry Stitched Lowery, $3,195, www.burberryusa.com.

The chain-link detailing on this chocolate-colored hobo evokes the hardware seen on Eva's breathtaking Burberry bag, but in much smaller doses. It is however, is big enough to serve as your hand-held bag while traveling. Remember, the more you can fit in your carry on, the lighter your luggage (and the less you have to spend on it) during holiday travels.
Chinese Laundry Hobo, $96, www.chineselaundrybags.com.
How did new mom Ashlee Simpson keep her boho chic style in the last days of her pregnancy? By evoking retro-70's cool with a suede fringe hobo.
Stuart Weitzman Fringe Hobo, $745, www.stuartweitzman.com.
Clint Brewer, Splash News
The fringe trend comes and goes, so there's no need to break the break on this look, instead steal Ashley's style with this fun, faux option. Aside from the sweet price, this shoulder bag also has shorter fringe so it will work on any woman's arm, irregardless of height. Ashley's hobo, on the other hand, is not for those us that are vertically challenged.
Melie Bianco Lace Fringe Hobo, $79.99, www.fashionflairs.com.
Katy Perry was spotted in Sydney -- no, not kissing a girl! The singer was promoting her latest CD and she was carrying a bold, electric blue satchel. She paired it with a floral print dress and ruby-red shoes. We recommend letting the brightness of the bag stand on its own.
Mulberry Small Mabel Bag, $695, www.mulberry.com.
PhotoNews International Inc., FilmMagic
Buckle-up for some fashion fun. Add a splash of excitement to your usual corporate attire by pairing it with this blue satchel.
Nicole Lee Small Bag with Lange Stitch, $43.20, www.nicoleleeonline.com.
Who says stars won't be seen in the same outfit twice? Eva Longoria loves her Gerard Darel shoulder bag so much, she brings it everywhere. Darel is a French designer whose slouchy leather bags are coveted by fashion insiders and a slew of celebs, including Longoria, Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Alba.
Gerard Darel 36hr Midday Midnight, $895.00, www.shoprumor.com.

Everyone can be green with envy of your bags, as well. They'll never know you paid under $100 for this pocket-plentiful hobo, which comes in five other colors as well.
Bianco Green Triple Pocket Hobo, $75, www.fashionflairs.com.
It's only appropriate that our favorite girl-next-door, Jen Garner, is sporting a classic American brand. Her Coach bag has a timeless appeal and is worth the investment.
Coach Vintage Hamptons Hobo, $698, www.coach.com.

Pam's picks for this post are fabulous! Melie Bianco and Nicole Lee have really nice handbags at great prices. These bags are like those at http://www.shopdistinction.com where handbags are all under $100 and they give back to the fight against breast cancer with each purchase. Great post...well done Pam! :)

Why is Coach an "classic American brand" when the bags are made in China. I recently saw a microfibre Coach bag for $368.00! Not even leather and some poor Chinese woman probably earned a quarter for sewing the bag. Shame on Coach - put Americans to work!

I buy one Coach purse every 15 years. I use nothing else. I think this is very smart, better than paying $20 for a purse each season. That is like paying $1200 over 15 years. So I take offense to the "small brain" comment.
yogie 11-09-2008 @ 3:55PM
yeah joyce, but, the thing here is why do you have a bag that is 15 years old? everyo bag goes out of season and you wasted $200-$500 dollars on a bag that probably will not use in a few months.after you buy and use it. there are lots of nice bags out there for less than a $100.00 and you can;t tell if it's any less expensive than Coach.
joy 11-09-2008 @ 5:09PM
Just because you have good taste doesn't mean you have a small brain.
vicky 11-09-2008 @ 4:17PM
Coach is not a "classic american brand". ALL Coach products are made in China. Coach is only considered "designer" by immature kids that have never had real luxury designer stuff, overweight soccer moms, and people that still carry a JCPenney credit card.

I agree that Coach is a classic, but why would you only buy a bag once every 15 years????? Doesn't she get tired of it?
PLUS it's made in China! Probably with melamine.

"irregardless" in #5? Quoting from dictionary.com, "it (irregardless) has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so".

If I was you, I wouldn't be sour because I can't afford finer things. Maybe I can't afford finer things, but I still buy them because the quality of material their made with is better and lasts longer...just go to the factory outlets.
rocco 11-09-2008 @ 6:05PM

But Yogie, I find that when I buy (or receive) a really cheap bag something invariably falls off. Broken buckles, clasps, etc... the lining rips, or the pocket that holds my change bursts at the seams. No, I don't buy $1000 purses, but a good bag (like Coach) is worth a couple hundred dollars or so. I like to carry a lot of stuff and I don't like to shop for purses all that often.
Buy a classic style and stick with it. Try Loehman's or Filene's Basement if you can't find the outlets.
