Michael Stipe launches a line of shirts for Lacoste - Celebrity designers

Filed under: Celebrity, News, Hot or Not

As you've probably noticed, we're all about celebrity designers here at Style List, but somehow we never have very high expectations for their output. The latest collaboration between REM's Michael Stipe and classic high-end designer Lacoste is no exception. According to Rolling Stone, Stipe has put his creative touch on a new line of Lacoste's alligator-encrusted tennis shirts, and they're uhh -- how should we put this -- a little fugly unique.

In Michael's defense, we should say that the idea behind the shirt is actually very cool, and we appreciate the gesture. Still, the design -- which features a "two tone" photo of a surging stadium crowd from the perspective of the performer, in an all-over print no less -- comes off a little cheesy.

Maybe its the all over print that turns us off, or maybe it's just the generally tacky look of a polo shirt featuring a huge photo, but something really strikes us as being too much like a summer tour '08 concert shirt. He did design this $300 shirt for Lacoste, right?

Oh well, there are probably enough REM fans to sell all 12,000 of these limited edition shirts.
