Norma Kamali for Walmart: We Weigh the Pros and Cons

Filed under: Fashion, Best of the Season, Designers & Brands

Norma Kamali for Wal Mart Button-Up ShirtWe've raved about Norma Kamali before, and now we're giving you the lowdown on her latest collection...for Walmart.

Kamali, whose designs are heavily influenced by the 1980s, has teamed up with a handful of low-cost retailers over the years to bring her creations to the masses.

Her most popular of those efforts was probably her work with activewear company Everlast. Kamali proved expert at applying her avant-garde sense of shape and style to workout gear. But will her latest project, designing a range of very, very low-cost togs for Walmart, eclipse that success?

The prices are staggeringly low -- $35 for a suit, $6 for a handbag -- and the designs are modern, in versatile colors. But the looks don't capture Kamali's off-kilter aesthetic the way her creations for Spiegel and Everlast very much did. Most of the items are so simple, there's nothing that really sets them apart from the regular offerings on the Walmart racks.

Sure, there are a few great pieces from this line, and it's a great chance to own something from a well-known designer on the cheap. But unlike H&M or Target's ability to capture on-trend designs in a low-cost format, Walmart's effort doesn't quite make the grade.

That said, here are our favorite picks from the collection:
