Liquidators Choke on Influx of Unsold Clothing, Send it to Siberia
Filed under: Fashion, News, Designers & Brands
In the aftermath of a pretty dismal holiday shopping season, low-price retailers are now being inundated with what has been described by one veteran of the liquidation market as a "historic glut of goods." Ross, TJ Maxx, and similar retailers have been having a kind of heyday as consumers went bargain hunting over the holidays. Now, there's so much unsold junk out there, liquidators are sending it off to remote locales like Africa, Siberia and Pakistan. No joke, there's so much unsold stuff already crammed into the one-off stores that they can take no more. After months of retailers marking down the goods from 30%, to 60%, to 80% off -- it appears that there's no other way to get rid of the stuff but to send it offshore. So, if you're reading this in Siberia, you might want to keep an eye out for some sweet deals.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the amount of high-end fashion merchandise ending up in the hands of liquidators. Where as before you had to really question the authenticity of designer gear that was offered at 10% of the original retail price, these days you can almost trust it.
