Lucien Lelong by Jacqueline demornexLucien Lelong is probably the most famous designer you've never heard of. He was a contemporary of Chanel, and Dior, Balmain and Givenchy apprenticed with him. Photographers like Horst, Beaton and Man Ray photographed his gowns. But Monsieur Lelong has remained in the background, until now.

The beautifully illustrated Lucien Lelong by Jacqueline Demornex, published by Thames & Hudson, tells the story of his long career in Paris fashion, including his heroic efforts to save French couture during World War II.

From the 1920s through the 50s, M. Lelong worked in a distinctive, flowing style that was meant to be seen in motion. He loved an athletic figure, and his glamourous designs are body conscious and beautifully draped. They could easily appear on the red carpet today.

M. Lelong was also a marketing visionary. He was one of the earliest designers to branch out into perfumes, and continuously searched for ways to broaden the reach of his work.

Students of fashion, as well as lovers of early 20th century French couture, will thoroughly enjoy learning more about the work of Lucien Lelong, a central figure of the time.
