The Skinny Bitches Love Their Jeans

Whether you agree with their lifestyle or not, the authors of the best-selling book, Skinny Bitch, have made a real impact. They've come out with a number of books promoting the benefits of becoming a vegan, and, most recently, they've released a couple of "Skinny Bitch Fitness" DVDs. We had a chance to sit down and talk to them, and while we touched on diet and fitness (of course), we also chatted about fashion.Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, the Skinny Bitches, are the real deal when it comes to being vegan. They don't eat animals or animal products, and they don't wear it, either. And, while their book title might lead you to believe they promote being model thin and, well, a bee-yotch, that's not the case.
Kim is a former model, while Rory worked for Ford Models, so both have a background in fashion. Check out their style tips below, and head over here to read more of our chat with the surprisingly un-bitchy Skinny Bitch girls.
What kind of style tips have you held on to from your days in the modeling business?
Rory: I think that, whatever's considered "in fashion" you need to wear something you're comfortable in. If you're going to be tugging at your hem all night, or adjusting your waistline, or you're going to feel self-conscious, you're not wearing the right thing. You have to feel great.
Kim: And don't try to be someone that you're not. Sort of finding your own style, and maybe that's taking a little from magazines or from actresses and incorporating those things into your style. Be comfortable and happy and feel good about yourself.
Rory: I used to feel like, "Who am I to wear that? That's way too trendy, way too cool for me. People will make fun of me if I wear that." And they weren't these outrageous things, just very in style things that I didn't feel like I had the right to wear. I don't know where I got that idea, or when and how I got over it, but know that you have the right to wear whatever you want. You don't need permission, you don't need to feel funny about it, and if your friends are going to make fun of you or give you grief about it, you need to ditch those friends. Life is short – feel free to do what you want. To be afraid to put on an article of clothing is a bigger metaphor for your life.
How would you describe your personal styles?
Rory: Kim looks to me the way you see models in magazines, taking flights to different places, wearing cool jeans and a long sweater, something very simple and casual, but chic.
Kim: I like how she describes me better than I could describe myself!
Rory: Classic chic.
Kim: For me, a great pair of jeans is something you can just add a great top to, it's a staple. And I didn't learn that until just a few years ago that that was a must.
Rory: It did change my life, to have a pair of "go-to" jeans. Now I have a bunch, but I never realized how important it was. Kim and I are both into the jeans, cute shirt, and heels. Flip flops during the day, flip flops at night. In L.A., we're very lucky that you can wear jeans to dressy things. We're not the girls dressed to the nines, all made up and trendy.
Also, for me, what I don't wear is just as important as what I do wear. I wouldn't be caught dead in fur or leather. There is nothing fashionable about wearing the skins of tortured, slaughtered animals. Nowadays, there are so many alternatives that look and feel like the real deal, minus the cruelty. Not only that, the faux stuff is always much more affordable.
Do you have any favorite designers, stores, websites, or boutiques?
Rory: Yes, yes, yes. Alternative Outfitters, olsen Haus for great shoes. Matt & Nat, they do amazing handbags, and I love Moo Shoes. I also love The GirlieGirl Army for everything -- good deals and the newest trends, Mink Shoes, Loyale Clothing, Beyond Skin, and Green With Glamour.
