Today's featured indie designer is Sharon Boucher of Embellished Life Designs. Sharon whips up one of a kind crochet accessories from her Queens, New York base, combining unique colors and textures of luxury yarns to create not only scarves, but crochet jewelry and other accessories as well.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. I'm a crochet designer, using luxe yarns, fibers and materials to create exciting designs.

How did you get started as a designer? I had learned crochet when I was little, but didn't like the cotton thread I was taught to use. I rediscovered it years later while on maternity leave with my first son -- there were so many more varieties of yarn on the market than before. My husband sold my items at his job, a law firm, and viola!

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Look outside the box. Learning other skills are handy in making your work distinctive. Go against the grain, and make what you love, not what everyone else is making. As long as you are passionate about your work, it will come across to others.

What inspires your work? Nature mostly, and other fiber crafts, like embroidery, knitting, felting. I pore through hundreds of books yearly, including history and art. Almost anything can strike a chord and start me on the path to an idea. The Caribbean (where I'm from) is also a big inspiration: bright colors and varied texture abound, and are a source of never-ending design ideas.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I'm a big fan of embellished clothing; for example, I love Anthropologie sweaters. I also love earrings and lipstick and feel quite naked leaving home without them. They are my impulse buys and a quick pick me upper.
