Uhuru Design - Eco-Friendly Luxury Furniture
Filed under: Haute Home, Interviews, News
We were lucky enough to recently chat with the founders of Uhuru Design, Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath. They founded this line of eco-friendly luxury furniture in 2004, and have been receiving rave reviews ever since for their beautiful modern home decor. Each of their pieces is handcrafted from reclaimed or upcycled metal and wood in their Brooklyn studio.
What inspires your work? We pull inspiration from every aspect of our day to day lives and our extensive travels. Our design process varies from piece to piece. We either start with a "found" material and work into a form, or we start with a form or idea and figure out the materials and processes needed to make that product sustainable.
Who are your favorite designers? Moooi, droog, Gordon Matta-Clark, Traditional Japanese designers, anything designed in Brooklyn and, of course, nature. What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? DC shoes, a sick pair of vintage blue jeans and a white or black tee and you're all set.
Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Personally, the best part of our journey is what we have accomplished as a team. We have been creating an environment in which anything is possible from day to day. We love what we do and it is getting more fun every day. I would suggest finding a great crew of like minded people to grow with.
Where can people find your work? Various boutiques and of course, ShopFlick online. :)
We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.

This was a really cool post. I especially enjoyed the video! These one-of-a-kind pieces are truly conversation starters and anyone would be lucky to own one. I especially like the photo of the small table. Very innovative design. At my company, http://ecogpainters.com/, we're huge fans of talented people that take the environment into consideration when creating something new. Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE these designs! It's been really hard to find furniture for my apartment that trendy, but also not terrible for our earth! I also found this other blog that talks about eco-friendly products- its blog.guffly.com and you should definetly check it out if your interested in finding products that are pretty but also good for our earth!
I really this designer and I like that each piece is indiviualized and made from something that was old and thrown out! these are great!
