Yotam Solomon - Interview with LA's Top Young Designer

Filed under: Accessories, Fashion, News, Best of the Season

We recently caught up with rising star Yotam Solomon, who was the youngest designer ever to show at Los Angeles Fashion Week. This Israeli-born prodigy is already an editorial favorite and has been featured in Women's Wear Daily and British Vogue for his beautiful ready to wear collections as well as his amazingly cutting edge, high fashion shoe designs.

What inspires your work? Inspiration for me comes from nature, cultures, and other visual art mediums. There is so much to draw from, especially for me living in LA I find that there is a close equilibrium between nature and the city life.

People are so active in this city for a reason; there is much to do, and much to see.
Inspiration can literally come from anything! A wave on the shoreline or a reconstruction work done in downtown LA that reveals amazing marble artwork imported from Europe in the early 1900's. One of the truly amazing things that happens suddenly is reaching an idea inspired by an identity wearing a garment that is reconstructed in an unusual way. Thank all of you innovative thinkers out there.

Who are your favorite designers? Giles Deacon, Michael Angel, and Kristian Aadnevik.

What are your top fashion, beauty, accessory or art must-haves? Unique pieces that have supreme tailoring and fit; it is about finding pieces that match you as a person on all levels. Top fashion for me is about a great coat, or that perfect pair of shoes. Beauty is about amazing lotions and products containing minerals from the Dead Sea, and other exotic regions on Earth. Accessories would include belts, scarves, and cufflinks. Art must-haves would be a Cecily Brown painting or if I'm really lucky a Zaha Hadid installation in my house.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Devote yourself as much as you can to your work, and know to make the right connections with friends and acquaintances in your industry.

Anything else you would like to add? Beauty is all around us and anyone that has an innovative idea should not let anyone or anything stand in their way if they truly believe in it.

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.
