JFK's Regifted Watch Goes up on the Auction Block

Owning anything that JFK ever wore, touched, or looked at is essential for any 20th century collector worth his salt -- like J Peterman and his JFK golf clubs -- but this piece of Kennedy bling is really something different. At first glance, it's a very presidential-looking 14k gold, 57 jewel watch with a leather band -- given to JFK in 1963 by the Evangeline family. The plot thickens -- and the historical value skyrockets -- when you combine that with the fact that Jackie regifted the watch to her second husband Aristotle Onassis as an anniversary present in 1971.

That's right, Jackie O regifted. But she didn't just regift in the usual, absentminded, trying to pass it off as new kinda way. Oh no, she gave her dead husband's gold watch as anniversary present to her new one. Who does that?

Speculate on that all you want; there's a really long and detailed account of the creepy regifting incident on NYSocialDiary. Making the watch even more valuable is the fact that both giftings were documented by inscriptions on the watch itself.

The original engraving on the back of the watch reads "To President John F. Kennedy from the Evangelines, 1963." Then, years later, Jackie had the letters "FALJ" (For Ari, Love Jackie) engraved on the side of the bezel when she gave it to Ari in 1971.

If you've got a few hundred grand lying around, Antiquorum will be auctioning off the infamous watch tomorrow, March 5. It's probably as good an investment as any these days.

Aside from the super valuable timepiece -- which is a bit out of our price range -- what do you think about Jackie's regifting? Is it creepy? Or was Jackie simply ahead of her time?
