Get a Glam Closet - Tip of the Day!

Filed under: Fashion, How to Wear

After a little motivation from celeb stylist Rachel Zoe, Style from A to Zoe, and some InStyle advice, we are going to give our closets a good spring cleaning and decorating. The top notch stylist and lofty fashion mag both agree that weeding out your closet is a great boost. So here's how we're doing it.

Organize: If you've ever read Rachel's book, you would have come across a chapter chock full of tips on closet organization. So first things first, you will need to lay out everything you have. Rings, bags, shoes, clothes ... everything, so you can survey what you have and edit. If you don't love it, haven't worn it for ages, or it still has tags from 1997, bag it. For an even bigger mood enhancer, donate your "no" items to the Goodwill or nearest Salvation Army. You'll make the world a more fashionable place for it.

After you've ransacked your wardrobe and feel that it is pared down to things that are essentially you, it's time to declutter according to InStyle. Here are their top tips with a little insight from us.

1. Think beyond wire racks: In Rachel's book she mentions how her mother uses clear nail storage bins for her vast jewelry collection. Other Home Depot items like drawer pulls are also a pretty way to hang long necklaces or your flirtiest lingerie. You can even stack your purses vertically and use bookends to anchor them – another great way to add a little personal flavor to a bland space.

2. Find a hanger you love: Most celebrity closets look like a boutique. Take note and get some matching hangers. Wooden ones work best but even a plastic one in a metallic will bring a chic boutique look to your closet.

3. Decorate: Just because it's your closet doesn't mean you shouldn't dress it like you would your living room. Choose a color scheme – pink is fun, feminine and our favorite closet pick. And really, where else could you get away with it? Add pretty shelving, a cute carpet, and even a shot of color via girly wallpaper. Paint your old armoire, cabinet or any other storage unit. Try a metallic color for a glamorous affect. Add a 60-watt bulb – the cooler lighting is more flattering than a higher wattage or fluorescent. Lastly, add a frameless mirror (frames can box you in).

4. Storage: To finish, you want to store your items away properly to prevent any damage. Toss dry-cleaning bags right away. Overtime they can actually discolor clothes. If you have a window, make sure it is tinted so that the sun doesn't fade clothing either. Fold sweaters and tuck them into a breathable bag. And never vacuum seal – this can flatten knits for good. As a final note, keep your closet bug free by adding lavender sachets which, as a bonus, will also make your closet smell like heaven.
