Style Evolution Julia Roberts

We love her when she wears weird socks or unflattering suits. We love her when she wears elegant designer gowns. We love her when she looks demure. We love her when she looks sexy. As long as Julia Roberts is smiling her unabashed, irresistible smile, or letting loose with that goofy giggle, it's hard to beat up on her style choices. There's a reason she's called "America's Sweetheart." Click on to see her many looks over the past 20 years.

When 20-year-old Julia Roberts wore this oversized knit and over-the-knee socks combo to the premiere of "Great Balls of Fire!" she had only one major film role to her name, "Mystic Pizza". Within a matter of months her next project would change her world -- and her style.

The young redheaded actress starred alongside Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Sally Fields, and Dolly Parton in 1989's "Steel Magnolias". Roberts' ill-fitting suit left something to be desired, but it's not like she had a lot of fashion competition here.

Sporting her trademark tumble of red curls and an oversized men's suit, Roberts snagged the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Steel Magnolias" at the 47th Annual Golden Globe Awards in 1990.

Roberts' first high-profile Hollywood romance was with a co-star (a married one at that!). She started dating Kiefer Sutherland after they met on the set of "Flatliners" in 1990. At the Oscars that year, she wore straight hair, and a hemline that wasn't. Note the shoes.

Apparently taking her fashion tips from Madonna videos, Roberts wore this pinstriped double breasted suit to the 48th Annual Golden Globe Awards in 1991. Questionable fashion aside, the actress had a very successful night taking home the award for Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her now legendary role in "Pretty Woman."

The newly engaged couple attended the premiere of Roberts' 1991 film "Sleeping with the Enemy." Unfortunately their oh-so-trendy 1990s outfits have fared as poorly as their romance. Roughly 2 months later Roberts broke off their engagement three days before the wedding date. Sounds harsh but her reason is rumored to have been Sutherland's secret relationship with a stripper. And haven't we seen shoes sort of like that somewhere before?

After taking a brief break from the spotlight, Roberts returned in 1993 with a new film and a new love. At the premiere of "The Pelican Brief" she walked the red carpet in this Morticia Adams inspired black dress with her new husband, country legend Lyle Lovett.

For the People's Choice Awards in 1995, Roberts picked a simple and sleek dress, but unfortunately fell prey to the mid-90s trend of matching your eyeshadow to your outfit.

At the 1997 premiere of "My Best Friend's Wedding" with co-star Rupert Everett, Roberts showed off her new dark bob and killer stems in this geometrically charged dress.
