Sally Hershberger On Giving Your Hair Guts

Sally Hershberger is a titan in the world of hair. She works with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, like Julia Roberts, Cindy Crawford and dreamy Zac Efron. Chair time with Sally starts at $800, and with good reason -- one of her best known coif creations is the shag she gave Meg Ryan for the 1995 film French Kiss, which inspired women everywhere to emulate Meg's cool, piece-y, "messy on purpose" look.
StyleList talked to Sally about spring hair trends, getting the most out of your cut (read: saving $$ by making it last a litte longer), and her new line of products for layered hair, aptly named "Shagg."
StyleList: Tell us about the hottest styles for spring.
Sally Hershberger: Right now the trend is the layered bob, like Drew Barrymore has on the April cover of W. Gwyneth Paltrow has a similar look, a little cleaner, and Ann Hathaway is wearing something in between them.
StyleList: What other looks are you seeing a lot of? Sally Hershberger: Bohemian hair is big, like on the Olsens, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan. Really long hair is cool. But you have to really condition it, with products that are made for your hair type.
StyleList: What do you think will be the next big thing?
Sally Hershberger: Eighties hair. I just did a wild Mohawk Pixie thing, that's short and very layered. Also, it's not my look, but that real crunchy Madonna hair with lots of product is very fashionable again.
StyleList: What's the best way to make the most of your haircut and make it last?

Sally Hershberger: Ninety percent of all people have layered hair. When the layers grow out, it goes flat and you want to give it a kick, usually with a cut. I created my new Shagg line of products specifically to give layers a boost, and a longer life.
StyleList: We love a hair boost! Tell us more about the Shagg line.
Sally Hershberger: It's a full line, shampoo, conditioner and styling products and it's what I use in my salons. It's clean and light, but it gives your hair guts, so you get more movement and body.
What Sally didn't mention was that the Shagg line is totally affordable – nothing costs more than $12.50 – and you can order it on her site, or buy it at your local Walgreens. So even if you can't afford an $800 haircut from Sally, you can still extend the life of your cut with her products and benefit from her hair experience and wisdom.

I second how flat your hair looks when the layers grow out! Just got my layers freshened and I'm psyched to try Sally's products!

I'm excited, too, especially since they're so affordable!
