Designers Question Michelle Obama's Style
Style Evolution: Michelle Obama
FIT FOR A QUEEN?

This week Michelle Obama style watch took a hit (gasp!) when designer Arnold Scassi told Women's Wear Daily that, "obviously, she doesn't have the right advice at this moment." The comment was a not-so-subtle swipe at Ikram Goldman, who has been acting as Mrs. Obama's fashion consigliere and echoed sentiments recently expressed by Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang who have also gone on record to criticize our First Lady's style choices. "As [the wife of] the head of the most important country in the world, you must dress at some points according to protocol," Scassi miffed. "You don't have to be conventional."
Conventional is hardly what we would call Jason Wu's one-shouldered goddess gown that Obama selected for inauguration night. Pretty? Youthful? Effervescent? Yes. But conventional no. (And didn't Nancy Reagan wear a similar version by James Galanos to her husband's festive evening in 1981?) As if wearing a frock by a young industry up-and-comer wasn't offensive enough, the sartorial feathers of both stately designers were really ruffled by Obama's decision to wear an Azzedine Alaia cardigan to meet Queen Elizabeth earlier this month. De la Renta, who is always impeccable and charming, even went as far as to tell WWD, "you don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.'"
Perhaps the notion of letting go is too much for certain captains of industry. Fashion historians will recount that Scassi and de la Renta have had tenure as the go-to designers for presidential wives up until now. The former's reign began with the Eisenhower administration and lasted all the way through to the recently departed Mrs. Bush, while the latter also created garments for Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and both of the Bush women during their stay in the White House.
Egos aside, change was the theme of the election after all, and apparently that didn't just stop with the President's own cabinet.

Does it make you feel more powerful to be a racist critic? Your comment only tells the public what an idiot your are. Look up that word in the dictionary..."idiot." Get pver yourself. Some people just never learn though...you'll always be a racist jerk because somewhere in your upbringing, there was a huge lapse in courtesy. Just keep your mouth shut.

I really hope you are talking about the author!!!!!!

Your mother obviously didn't teach you anything about manners. If you're an adult you need to be kept away from the general public. If you're a youngster your parents need to start monitoring what you write on the computer and get some counseling for you!

Nothing is going to look good on her!

Wow....put a muzzle on you, you idiot. Go back to the hole you crawled out of, racist jerk. Michelle Obama is classy and smart.... I guess that scares you!
aargh 4-24-2009 @ 12:02PM
what was racist about that remark? Did he mention race or color??
jojo 4-24-2009 @ 1:43PM
I see not everyone that is commenting will allow you to reply. So I am replying on your space re: comment from the blogger that says we are 'racist' if we dare talk about the Obamas let alone critique them. I think she dresses in a far to casual manner for the White House. I knew there was a dumbing down of America in progress, I didn't know it would carry over to the White House. Our current First Lady needs to buy a clue and look back at the elegant Fist Ladies that we have had in the past, she 'ain't' there with her clothes!

Who are we discussing? Ahhhhnold Scassi or Sarah? Scassi is an old fart with old fashioned taste. I've seen his work and it's time for him to retire. Michelle Obama is a total class act and I don't recall hearing any complaints from the Queen. It's 2009 -- we're in a deep recession and what's most respectful is that Michelle gets it. We criticize dictators who spend their country's wealth and leave the poor in the dust - Michelle plants a garden, wears J. Crew, and understands that her image reflects the feelings of the nation. It makes me sick to see celebrities like Paris Hilton, P. Diddy, JLo, and others in their ostentatious finery, big cars, butt ugly homes flashing their wealth in our faces - give it to charity - help the poor. Hire people who are unemployed - give some back to the people who supported you on your way up. Spoiled brats like Lindsey Lo and Britney Spears will learn the hard way that they are living a lie - grow up.
Arnold Scassi - time to retire! We don't need to spend tax dollars for your ugly finery. We like the fresh new look that Michelle brings.

This is not particularly in reply to the last comment, but more in scanning the entire blog. People...the Obama's flubbed the visit with the Queen. You don't touch her. You don't bow to ANYONE if you're an American. You just don't. I don't give a rat's patootie what any of the first family wears in most cases. I kind of wish that people would just leave it alone, because I don't care so long as they do their jobs. What I want to know is where are the advisors that SHOULD have told the Obamas the traditions and acceptable behavior when with the queen. It has nothing to do with racism. That card has been played to death. Every time there is an error, people flop down that card and I'm sick of it. No, I don't care for Obama or his wife. I don't care about his doggie, or his children. All I care about is if he does his flipping job. So far the only thing he's done that I agree with his his handling of that Pirate mess. You ignorant people go on wailing about racism because you just can't admit that anyone can make a mistake, even the Messiah Obama. How is he going to live up to any of that adulation? OH yeah, and leave the poor little queen alone. She's freaking 80 something, she is entitled to wear old lady clothes! Michelle Obama on the other hand, who cares if you're wearing pearls if the rest of the outfit is inappropriate? GET SOME GOOD ADVISORS!

Finally someone with taste is willing to stand up and tell Michelle the truth. I applaud these designers for speaking up. She is an attractive woman and her advisors don't seem to be helping her look her best. One doesn't need to spend a fortune on their clothing, but many of her "outfits" just look rediculous on her. Belts worn under her breasts, the "little sweaters", ruffles & puffs, no sleeves, high water pants, dresses that emphasize her larger hips... She ends up looking immature and ill advised. I also think that she, like her husband, don't listen to good advice. In the end, if she doesn't care that the world and this country's own citizens are laughing at her personal choices and nose thumbing, let her. But a little note Michelle, not only do you make yourself look like a joke.... you are making your staff and advisors look like they aren't doing a good job. I preferred it when the Presidency, The First Lady, and the White House were respected and honored. You two are trying to make it the "family den".

Her ethnicity does not matter. She's OUR representative, not some Free-wheeling Entrepreneur", so how she presents herself IS important. What she clearly lacks, and she has so stated, is respect for the office that she/they hold. She's trying to "get down" with the people, and the majority of the people would like to keep our country's dignity especially with other Heads of State. So could you listen to some advice???
vickie 4-26-2009 @ 9:43AM
Thanks, for stating your opinion well. I agree with you.

i think the main point of the article is summed up in the final sentence..perhaps you may want to re-read it..as i am looking at the picture i am not really fond of what the queen is wearing but no one comments on this..why...probably made by a designer..the attitude that her outfit is not seemly to meet the queen in is nonsense..it is during the day, she is reflecting her husband, she is wearing pearls! pearls are a staple of a classic wardrobe and the first lady is not there to upstage her husband..major designers are upset that she is not giving them a chance to advertise their gowns and are being petty..it is time for the young designers to make their names known today as well..give it a rest
barbara 4-27-2009 @ 6:14PM
the forst lady represents the USA; one does not go to the Queen.eventhogh it might have cost at least a thousand dollars; one does not touch the QUEEN;a real classless first lady.
hummerpoo2 4-24-2009 @ 6:13AM
I tend to agree with her critics. I feel that many of her outfits, particularly the one worn for her official portrait, look like she is getting ready to "do lunch" with her girlfriends. They hardly look like the wife of a Head of State. I don't feel that her critics are showing "sour grapes" at all. But I do find your immediate defense of the First Lady a "don't touch our idol!" attitude.
