Hairspray - Back with a Vengeance

Dale Bozzio, frontwoman of 80s band Missing Persons, was such a tease! Photo by Ron Wolfson, WireImage.com
She looked at the rest of us (who were coughing and nearly blinded) and said, "I'm sorry, but it's the only thing that works."
And did it ever.
Despite this girl's penchant for expensive-looking gear, her must-have accessory was a cheapo can of TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray, which she deemed the most critical component to her look. We watched in awe as the budget hairspray erected her avant-garde style. $4.49

If you plan on working any of the on-trend Eighties styles that were so inspiring this season - I'm still not over the hair at Marc - you know a mamby-pamby hairspray won't cut it. You need a hairspray with guts. Here are a few that don't disappoint.
L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin in Strong Hold. Previously unavailable in the US, Elnett was the one product that got beauty editors in a freaking tizzy. You see, unlike every other product under the sun, they couldn't just "call it in" and have it at their desk by end of day. The irony is, now everyone can go pick it up - at Target. Beauty democracy in full effect! $14.99
Aqua Net. There's something a bit kitschy and John Waters-y about this old school, hardcore, and positively shameless hairspray, but this product is no joke - it creates serious height. It peaked in the Eighties, after all. (Fun fact: Johnny Depp relies on it.) $2.99
Matrix Vavoom Extra Full Freezing Spray. If it's both height and width you're after, here's your poison. It's perfect for that full-bodied Dallas cheerleader hair, which frankly, I love. $13.99
ghd Ultimate Hairspray. At the shows, I've witnessed über-hairstylist Eugene Souleiman use this spray to keep those intricate, interwoven braided styles (that he's known for) firmly in place. It's strong stuff. Here's a hint: Apply it close to the hair for a really cool patent-leather finish. $27
60s-Inspired Updos
Break out the hairspray, the 60s are back! No, not the free love, loose flowing hair version of the decade, we're talking the early, Jackie O 1960s. From mini beehives to updated versions of classic French twists, anything that requires an entire bottle of Aqua Net and a box of bobby pins is hot for hair this fall.

I completely agree! I was an Aqua Net user for 20+ years, and I've just discovered Suave Freeze spray. It's a finer spray, with a much firmer hold!

Now if we can only get 80's Hard rock back in style instead of the crap that they call music today ....Life would be great!

yea, where's the music that was actually music???? I so agree...
Rockin' Ronnie 5-05-2009 @ 11:46PM
I'm with ya, brother. A lot of today's music is okay, but it just doesn't rock. We all could use some uplifting music in our lives!
And what about Splash? That was some serious hairspray!

Aqua Net is the best hairspray in the '60 and so was the Beehive hairdo. LOL

I'm a dude, 49 years old and I've been using AquaNet for years to keep my thinning and balding hair looking thicker and keeping it in place. I just found it by experimentation...I tried all the rest, AquaNet's the best!

I agree with Rave 4. Also the old Salon Selectives that smelled like green apples and the White Rain with the green lid. Those smells can transport me back in time.

hands down a real good one is " got 2 be glued" finishing spray! a tornado can't make this hair a mess with that stuff in it. and ..remember jhermack ( spelling) or final net, dippity doo". rave was ok, but didnt like the smell.
