According to the New York Daily News, Sutherland's only facing a desk appearance and minor misdemeanor assault charges from New York authorities, but heavier penalties may await him in LA, where the "24" star is currently serving a five-year probation term.
As a result of his second DUI conviction -- for which he served 48 days in jail -- he's on thin ice with Los Angeles authorities, and it's quite possible that they will throw the book at him. According to LA criminal defense attorney Steve Sitkoff:
"If Sutherland's found in violation of probation for battery, and if he was intoxicated at the time, he could very well be sentenced to another 48 days or more."
The fiasco occurred at an afterparty for the Met's Costume Institute Gala, where Proenza Schouler designer Jack McCollough allegedly bumped into 42-year-old Brooke Shields and didn't apologize. That's when Kiefer went all Jack Bauer on him, reportedly headbutting the designer and breaking his nose.
In the aftermath, even Shields is not defending Kiefer's actions. According to The NY Daily News , her reps told TMZ that "she was jostled, but nothing happened to her." (This definitely takes defending a woman's honor to a whole new level!)
As for McCollough, he was spotted by reporters outside his apartment yesterday sporting a scab on his nose and a pair of Oakley sunglasses (to conceal a black eye?). Apparently, he told The NY Daily News that he's "doing fine." However, McCollough's people sound pretty bitter about the whole thing. From People Magazine:
"Anyone who knows Jack McCollough knows that he would not hurt a fly ... All we can say at this point is that he was the victim of a vicious, violent, unprovoked assault and that the matter is in the hands of the authorities."At this point, it sounds like Kiefer is pretty sorry he pulled the stunt, and he may be even sorrier if he gets thrown back in the can for another 48 days.
