Fake Nails Don't Have To Be Scary

When it comes to my manicures, I've always enforced a strict (what I like to call) "Chanel clause" -- if it's fake, I'm not interested.

Artificially enhanced nails typically scared me. The one time I saw a gorgeous faux manicure, it was on a snazzy retiree from Boca Raton, the kind of lady who made nail care (and mahjong) her full-time job. So I was completely surprised to learn that such extensive nail services -- specifically the UV gel manicure -- are making a comeback, and among people of working age and with little time (or cash) to spare.

"UV services have really grown in acceptance and popularity," says Jan Arnold, co-founder of CND. "In the past, fake nails got a bad rap."

A UV gel manicure is a process in which a special strengthening gel is applied to the nails (by a professional), and then cured under a UV lamp. The result is stronger, shinier, harder nails.

If you're scrunching your nose at the idea, thinking back perhaps to past experiences (or your mother's experiences), relax. The technology has improved greatly, says Arnold.

"Today, there is much less potential for any adverse reactions, the gel isn't as sticky and gooey as it once was, and" -- this is the best part -- "it's no longer the commitment it used to be."

If you tire of "nail enhancements," as Arnold refers to them, a professional can safely remove them by soaking your gel fingertips in a special solution. It takes no longer than a half-hour, and your natural nails will remain healthy and intact. (Before, you were kinda screwed.)

I admit, "nail enhancements" seem pretty extravagant right now, but considering Arnold says your manicure can stay chip-free and glossy for way longer than your average mani, you can actually rationalize it as cost-effective (if you're the type whose obsessive about her nails). Arnold can go three full weeks before she needs a touch-up.
