If you've ever sniffed high and low in vain searching for that one perfect fragrance you can call your own, I have the solution -- custom blend it! Fancy and luxurious? You bet! Super expensive and complicated? Not at Mémoire Liquide Bespoke Perfumery, where I created my dream scent for under $100.

Founded by sisters Robin Coe-Hutshing and Jennifer Coe-Bakewell (and favored by celebs such as Kate Hudson and Reese Witherspoon), Mémoire Liquide offers its custom-made scents at Studio Beautymix at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, Calif. and Bloomingdale's 59th Street in New York City. You can also choose from a selection of unique ready-to-wear fragrances at Henri Bendel and studiobeautymix.com.

I found myself at Bloomie's, ready to make my own scent, delighted by the rows of liquid-filled glass bottles that hark back to ye olde apothecaries, back when perfumery was a delicate craft and a true luxury. Robin and Jennifer explained that to prevent people from getting overwhelmed they offer 75 proprietary fragrance blends (instead of a bazillion single notes) that can be worn alone or blended together. All 75 blends are designed to work together so you don't run the risk of accidentally mixing a nasty concoction.

To start, Robin asked me what notes I like (green and dewy) and don't like (overly floral or spicy) and then she and Jennifer quickly went to work pulling stoppers out of glass bottles and offering them up to my nose. Right away the fresh and spring-y Tilleul de Grasse became a front-runner, followed by a crisp version of my all-time favorite note of orange blossom called Fleur D'Oranger.

What I didn't expect to end up with was the girlie and super-sweet blend of Violette Glacee, but with the other two choices it worked beautifully. Instead of mixing all three together in one eau de parfum spray ($75), Robin suggested I go with the roll-on trio set ($90), each blend in its own individual bottle so I can layer them however I want, whenever I want. So now when people ask me what fragrance I'm wearing I can breezily say, "Oh this? It was custom blended just for me."
