Afghan Hands - Embroidered Scarves with a Conscience and Claire Danes' Bridesmaids Gift?
That's me (right) at the event with Claire Danes and her fiancé Hugh Dancy.
While the setting and the people were undeniably beautiful, it was the hand-embroidered shawls and scarves that stole the limelight.
The women who create these elegant works of art are widows living in Afghanistan whose husbands were killed by the Taliban.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales go to these women, who are paid to learn how to embroider and offered seminars on basic human, legal and religious rights -- something they would otherwise not have access to. Talk about a worthy cause!

I chatted with Claire Danes, a longtime supporter, who said that she has given one as a gift to everyone she knows. Her very cute and nice fiancé Hugh Dancy was there and agreed that she is a compulsive Afghan Hands shawl-giver.So, how about the possibility of giving them as bridesmaids gifts for her upcoming wedding? "All my friends already have one, but I guess you can never have too many!" she said.
