Shu Uemura's Art of Hair - Meet Ryoji and His Magic Chopsticks

Filed under: Cuts & Style, Hair

I took my seat at a recent press event for Shu Uemura's new hairstyling products with no clue who Ryoji Imaizumi is. By the time I left, I was obsessed with him.

As with most things Japanese, the demonstration I was about to see would be thoroughly entertaining, a little bit beyond my comprehension, and completely awesome.

The music was Aphex Twin meets underground club. The stage was set, the model was ready. The crowd was excited. Out comes the fabled Ryoji who was more or less dressed like your typical edgy hairstylist. Except for one thing:

Chopsticks taped to his fingers.

He used them, Edward Scissorhands-eque, to style the model's hair.

His other wrist was adorned with some sort of leather glove-like contraption that kept a can of hairspray conveniently affixed to his palm, leaving his fingers free to hold scissors. That's just how Ryoji rolls.

If you think this display means that the new Art of Hair styling products (out this summer) are too wacky for you, think again!

These new launches have a legacy to live up to, since the regular haircare line (which debuted in '07) quickly reached cult status for it's super-effective natural formulas. And with ingredients like bamboo extract, Imperial Black Sugar and Sea Fennel, the styling products promise to be just as luxe. (Chopsticks optional.)
