Good news! To get the looks seen at this season's Paris Haute Couture shows, you don't need $100,000 for a dress nor Orlando Pita on contract.

Haute couture hair, typically shorthand for "crazy hair," turned out to be markedly more subdued than in past seasons. Though I slightly missed the fanciful, hair-as-sculpture credo that the couture shows are known for, I welcome any high-fashion trend that's relatively easy (and inexpensive) to achieve.

Here are my top three favorites, all as doable and affordable as they are chic.

  • Exhibit A (above left): The tumbling waves at Jean Paul Gaultier. Grab some large hot rollers, volumizing spray (I love Neil George's, $24) and a good brush (to run through those curls), and voila, you're so very JPG.
  • Exhibit B (above middle): Chanel for $1.19? Not exactly, but get yourself a good teasing comb (like this one from Sally Beauty) and backcomb your roots, which will give your hair the seriously haute feeling of the house's much adored couture collection. (Add winged eyeliner, and you so know Karl would approve.)
  • Exhibit C (above right): There it was: At Jean Paul Gaultier, we saw the sexy, layered bob that Sally Hershberger told us was going to be big (and that was months ago!). Once you get the cut, just add a little product to rough it up for this cool, Debbie Harry-esque feeling. (Hershberger's Shagg line was invented for this purpose.)
