Solange Knowles Speaks Out About Shaved Head

Solange Knowles (younger sister to Beyoncé) was photographed this week with a bald head while taking her son to school.
Solange--who had been bald for two weeks before the paparazzi shot was taken--doesn't find her haircut to be a big deal: "i. have. done. this. twice. in. my. life. i. was 16. i was 18," the star recently tweeted.
The reasons behind her decision? "this. phase. of. my. life. i. want to spend . the time. the energy. and the money. on something else. not in the hair salon." the aspiring singer and young mother explained via Twitter.
But in addition to enduring the inevitable negative remarks from disapprovers, Solange was also upset when fodder over her new 'do became more talked about on Twitter than a very important global event:
"i was disappointed to see my name more talked about then #iranelection," she tweeted.
It takes a lot of guts for a girl to get rid of her hair, and we salute Solange for her fearlessness--as well as bringing important topics like the Iran Election and AIDS Awareness (Solange has worked with MTV and The Body Shop to promote safe sex campaigns) back into the picture for her young fans.

WTF? You'd think the geniuses at Stylist would know the difference between a TWA (teeny, weeny afro) and bald. Solange isn't "bald."
Good for her. Natural is ALWAYS better than straightened. A lot of black mothers with active children opt for a shorter 'do and natural hair for convenience, and I don't blame Solange for doing the same. A lot of sisters as they get older cut their locks as well. They no longer want to torture their hair to look more like white women, or spend the time styling it. They find natural, shorter hair liberating, taking pride in "happy, nappy hair."
Solange is right. Why spend all that money in the salon -- or on wigs made of white/Asian hair that gets glued to one's face (a la Beyonce?)?
Solange looks great. Natural as God made her. More power to her.

Good for Solange! I admire a strong, sexy sister willing to set herself apart from the rest of the wonder weaves of the world. She looks great with the teenie tiny afro. I bet she looked FINE bald-headed as well. I think she should REALLY shock people next time and just walk out in public with a clean dome and not even be phased by any of the attention. The bald women's movement is starting to gain momentum!
be bold be bald ladies!

I have had my hair cut for 7 years now and love it. It's much shorter than Solange's. It's just hair and it doesn't define one.

kudos to solange the cut looks great on her and yes going natural is the best feeling ever I personally will be doing a "big chop" in december of this year after transitioning from relaxed to natural...she is a strong black beautiful young woman and her hair does not define her, her spirit and talent does :o)

I also wear the bald look , and I love it!
My husband loves it on me also, he finds it sexy and exotic.
I believe I have the feminine freatures and head shape to wear it, and so does Solange! You go lady!
The only difference between her and myself in regards to our hairstyle is that I keep my head shaved sensually smooth, I lather up and shave it with my triple edge razor.
On occasion I grow it out into a short afro, but sooner or later I go back to the bald look and wearing it nice 'n smooth.
The bald look can be a sexy look on a beautiful lady, especially when she is dolled up in her makeup, long dangle earrings, a sexy dress, etc..
