Cover girl Kelly Clarkson, no stranger to retouching, is a sliver of her normal self on the September issue.
The slimming down is causing such a stir that SELF editor Lucy Danziger addressed the issue on her blog.
The first line of the post: "Do we retouch? Yes!"
Aside from regular celebrity retouching, Danziger openly admits to asking the art department to "shave off" a little from her own hips in a photo of her finishing a marathon that ran in the magazine.
"Whether she (Clarkson) is up or down in pounds is irrelevant (and to set the record straight, she works out and does boot-camp-style training, so she is as fit as anyone else we have featured in SELF)," Danziger writes.
"Kelly says she doesn't care what people think of her weight. So we say: That is the role model for the rest of us."
But, tell us, if Kelly is fine with her weight, why retouch at all?

These days, these photos are more for artistic value than to be realistic. I love using photoshop to make myself look thinner, younger, more aesthetically pleasing in general. Everyone just needs to accept that photography is art and no longer meant to be a realistic depiction.

Your editor is a hypocrite. She should just come clean and state the magazine is anti-fat. With all her interviews she just looks worse and worse. By making silly excuses and trying to cover the fact that the magazine thinks that having someone a touch larger will hurt sales. Take a chance and see what happens. No one cares if Kelly is large we love because she sings great. The magazine lost total site of who she is and why she is a great cover girl. It's her voice and who she is..get it!

The magazine would probably sell more issues with a slightly plumper, more realistic model/celeb on the cover. People want to relate to the folks they see in magazines -- like, oh yeah, Gwyneth Paltrow's hair gets frizzy too! The last thing they need to see is another skinny girl on the cover. (we get it, models are skinny, now show us some real people!!)
