Many a fashionista sacrificed beauty sleep last night to watch the editrix of Vogue -- and star of upcoming movie "The September Issue" -- appear on "The Late Show With David Letterman."

In case you missed it, Wintour stepped out in a black-and-white floral Carolina Herrera dress and her signature sunglasses, which she promptly took off upon sitting down. (Our money was on the shades coming off for the appearance.)

And while the interview was awkward at times, Wintour was a good sport as she tried her hand at humor, teasing Letterman about his socks (recommending he look into designer Thom Browne) and explaining that Vogue isn't "only run by senior citizens."

She also poked fun at her own reputation, saying, "I read in the New York Times this week that I'm an ice queen, I'm the sun king, I'm an alien fleeing from District 9 and I'm a dominatrix. I recon that makes me lukewarm royalty with a whip from outer space. What do you think?"

And when Letterman asked if she really was as cold as movies like "The Devil Wears Prada" portray her, she replied: "Well, I'm very decisive and I try and give very clear direction to the people that I'm working with, and sometimes, unfortunately, they don't hear the answer that they would like to hear."

He later asks her if she's ever put anyone in a headlock. "Maybe you?," Wintour retorted, sending the audience into fits of laughter.

She also gave some advice on what to do when your fashion budget has been whittled down to $20 due to the rocky economy.

"Well, you could buy lipstick," she suggests.

Though she looked cold (literally!) in Letterman's infamously freezing studio, did Wintour manage to melt her icy image or do you still think she's the devil in a designer dress? Leave a comment!
