What to wear was a big question. But who we were going to see was an even bigger question. Was it possible that I would even be lucky enough to get a Lindsay sighting, even though she had skipped Charlotte Ronson show earlier in the day?
I hopped in a cab with a friend and we headed down to Abe and Arthur's, a chic new restaurant and bar on West 14th Street. We pushed our way through a mob of high-heeled, fur clad and fabulously trendy New Yorkers. (They were clearly all fashion folks and I immediately started to rethink my classic but a little boring Susana Monaco little black dress.)
Paparazzi almost knocked us onto the curb as they swarmed around a woman near the front. In a hat and T-shirt was someone, but who? Finally they moved and I caught a glimpse: Charlotte's sister and Lindsay Lohan's on-again off-again girlfriend, the DJ Samantha Ronson, stood smoking by the door and then quickly disappeared back inside.
OMG! My friend and I exchanged star-struck looks but kept our cool. No need to emphasize our newcomer status.
Once inside, the upstairs room was so packed we couldn't move. But we happily stood in place near the stairs, watching Samantha Ronson at the turntable, bumping to the beats and celebrity-spotting. I recognized Erin Lucas from "The City" and Manhattan socialite Tinsley Mortimer, both dressed for a Fashion Week night out on the town.
We left just a little before the party ended. No Lindsay sighting, but it didn't make a difference. We had just had our first real glimpse into New York fashion nightlife, and I was looking forward to more.
