Looking like a high fashion mad hatter, Gaga kicked off the red carpet for the MTV VMAs on September 13, 2009 in a Phantom of the Opera-esque face mask, a couture neck brace, and a Jean Paul Gaultier dress.

On stage at the VMAs, it was time to reprise her hit "Paparazzi" with a futuristic white cutout leotard, fishnets, and over-the-knee boots.

When it came time to accept her MTV award, Gaga stepped out in head-to-toe red lace, as well as a crown-like topper. Thankfully, she eventually removed her mask to address her fans face-to-face.

I think shes a freak who trys WAY too hard. Her music is awesome but she makes her self look stupid with those awful outfits. That red mess at the MTV awards was hilarous. I never thought would be able to top something that ugly. That is until she came in wearing a birds nest around her face. HAHAHAHAHA

You are right that bird nest thing was actually really funny. The girl is talented she don't need all that. She can play like 31 instruments she can just preform and be fine. But on the other hand she seems to be having fun and isn't hurting anyone so who am I to judge.

Lady Gaga was simply making a statement during her performance on how we build our celebrities up so that we can knock them down til they bleed dry and then they literrally get hung to dry....she is a performance artist. I guess some of you have to have everything spelled out for you.

Tara, thank you, I totally agree. I love her avant-garde element, and I think she is misunderstood. She is also talented. I saw her play at the Glastonbury Festival this summer and it was amazing.
